Group Responds to Kash rut Controversy
Editor, The Jewish News:
The Detroit Jewish com-
munity clearly feels that it
has the right to demand
convenient access to kosher
products which meet all of
the requirements of our tra-
dition. Rabbinical supervi-
sion is necessary for several
reasons:
First, consumers them-
selves are unable to verify
that products sold as kosher
are, in fact, kosher. Second,
many proprietors of kosher
establishments (butchers,
caterers, etc.) are not per-
sonally observant and are
not aware of all the re-
quirements of Jewish law.
Most importantly, self-
enforcement is not suffi-
cient, even with observant
proprietors. Therefore, pro-
per supervision is essential.
The Council of Orthodox
Rabbis is a community-
based organization of 22
rabbis, representing the
broad \ spectrum of
synagogues and schools in
the Orthodox community.
As part of the wide range of
rabbinical activities, the
council provides the only

Recently the council
discovered that some
Jewish consumers had
been purchasing un-
kashered ground meat
without realizing it could
not be made kosher
through the normal soak-
ing and salting process.
While the council had
previously allowed
butchers to sell such
meat to non-Jewish cus-
tomers, they- have de-
cided that henceforth
only kashered meat be

During recent years,
the council has made a
continual effort to ex-
pand its services and to
keep pace with the needs
of the growing number of
kashrut observant Jews
in the Detroit community.
In addition, the council
has worked hard to de-
velop an effective liaison
with lay groups in-
terested in protecting the
rights of kosher consum-
ers.
Included in its new activi-
ties are periodic publica-
tions of Koshergram news-
letters (which are distrib-
uted in cooperation with the
