Day School Student Wins Spelling Contest

TOPEKA, Kan. (JTA) —
Tanya Zahavah, a fifth-
grade student at the Hyman
Brand Hebrew Academy, in
suburban Kansas City, is
the winner of the All-

-sepulchral and perspicacity,
and earned the right to re-
present Kansas in the fi-
nals of the National Spel-
ling Bee in Washington,
D.C. next month.

Jane Sherman to Lead JWF Women

Jane Sherman was
elected president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation
Women's Division at its
36th annual meeting, held
May 12 at Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
Mrs. Sherman has been a
vice president of the di-
vision and its chairman of
the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign since 1980. She cur-
rently serves as co-
chairman of the National
Project Renewal Commit-
tee, and is also a member of
Federation's Board of Gov-
ernors and Executive
Committee. In 1971, she re-
ceived Federation's Sylvia
Simon Greenberg Award for
outstanding leadership.

summarized the year's
achievements.
The division's former
presidents presented the
program, offering high-
lights of their terms of office
and personal recollections.

by Maida Portnoy and Jo
Weiner.
The annual meeting was
coordinated by former
President Esther Jones and
Vice President Janice
Schwartz.

Bond Women

State Sen. Douglas Ross
has invited the Detroit
Chapter of the Interna-
tional Israel Bond Golda
Meir Club to attend Senate
proceedings June 3, at
which time he will formally
introduce the Israel Bond
honor society to the legisla-
tive body.
