man of DATA, the umbrella
political representative in-
stitution of Argentine
Jewry, reported that the
armed forces in Argentina
had authorized the presence
of three rabbis in the south
of the country for spiritual
religious assistance to some
150 Jewish soldiers and
marines involved in the ac-
tion in the Falkland Is-
lands.
In a phone conversation
from Argentina, Gorenstein
told Jacob Kovadloff, direc-
tor of South American Af-
fairs 'of the American
Jewish Committee in New
York, that one rabbi,
Baruch Plavnik, left for
Comodoro Rivadavia in
south Argentina from
where he will continue to
the Falklands in an aircraft
of the International Red
Cross.
Two other rabbis, Miguel
Grunblat and Enrique
Pines, will follow soon to
Comodor Rivadavia and Rio
Gallegos, where the major
concentration of troops are
located. All three rabbis are
Conservative. They will
wear military uniforms and
iron helmets with Mogen
David insignia, Gorenstein
said.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
There were some upbeat
aliya statistics from Argen-
tina, Britain and the U.S.
during the first third of this
year, but generally the fig-
ures are slow and sluggish
with Soviet aliya still close
to rock-bottom.
More than 380 Argentine
olim were registered be-
tween January and April —
a rise of 25 percent on the
first third of last year. In
April alone 117 Argentines
arrived — up 50 percent —
from April 1981.
From
Britain
the
January-April figure was
313, a 60 percent rise on the
same period last year, and
the U.S. figure, 597, was a
20 percent hike. m

Soviet aliya was only 324
in the January-April period
compared to 760 in the same
period last year. The 324
were out of 1,150 Soviet
Jews who reached Vienna.
The dropout rate declined
slightly over the January-
April period and now stands
at around 73 percent, the
Agency said.
