Hartford President Cites
Dilemma of Jewish Profs

WASHINGTON - Be-
cause of "hangups" over
their religiosity, Jewish fa-
culty members of American
colleges and universities
are not likely to be of much
help to Jewish students, the
president of the University
of Hartford, who is Jewish,
declared.
Addressing the annual
meeting of the Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundations Com-
mission on the role of
Jewish faculty members on
the college campus,, Dr.
Stephen J. Trachtenberg
stated that the role of the
Jewish faculty member on
campus "is a difficult, even
a tormented, question."
Dr. Trachtenberg, a
member of the Hillel Com-
mission for eight years, said
that most Jewish teachers,
especially those in the social
sciences• and humanities,
seek to communicate gen-
eral humanistic and social
values, rather than the
specific values of their
Jewish culture.

From the point of view
of modern secular cul-
ture, he explained, the
Jewish perspective "is
either nationalistic
parochialism or a com-
plete distortion of
perspective." Secular
humanists who feel they
should not identify with
any single culture -
"that the whole globe is to
be the feast on which we
dine" - cannot be ex-

pected to tolerate a nar-
row concern with any
single nation or culture,
he said.
"It is this secular

humanistic framework that
is inhabited by the Jewish
faculty member in today's
academy," he said. These
faculty members "are nor-
mally not very observant"
religiously and have mini-
mal acquaintance, if any,
with Talmudic lore and
Jewish Biblical commen-
tary.
Trachtenberg said these
academics think of their
own Jewishness "with some
discomfort." Therefore, it
follows that they not only
often have little or nothing
to offer Jewish students but
may take special pains to
"disidentify" with Jewish
students.
The Hartford University
president urged Hillel to
"encourage a process" that
would enable them to get rid
of their hangups. It cannot
be imposed, he warned.

Egyptian Envoy
Suggests U.S.,
PLO Negotiate

.

WASHINGTON (JTA) -
Ashraf Ghorbal, Egypt's
ambassador to the United
States, suggested this week
that the Reagan Adminis-
tration conduct a "dialogue"
with the Palestine Libera-
tion 'Organization as a
means to induce the PLO to
"take the steps" toward
recognition of Israel.
"The United States is not
at war with the PLO,"
Ghorbal said in a wide rang-
ing discussion on Middle
East issues sponsored by the
American Enterprise Insti-
tute, a conservative think-
tank.
The PLO, Ghorbal said,
"seeks only an understand-
ing, a psychological um-
brella, a dialogue between
the U.S. and the PLO which
will be destined to help the
PLO be convinced that they
take the steps that we all
want them to take."
Ghorbal pointed out that
the PLO has but "one trump
card," that of recognition of
Israel, and "if they give that
away, they have nothing to
use in negotiations." The
United States' policy for
years'has been to withhold
any direct negotiations with
the PLO until the organiza-
tion recognizes Israel's
right to exist and accepts
United Nations Security
Council Resolutions 242
and 338.
