IT'S A BEAUTIFUL ride . . . out where the waters shimmer . . . and memories bounce back of fun days at Cass Lake .. . Keego Harbor has naturally changed from those yes- teryears, but no one can ever take away the memories that it is associ- ated with. The change has been so much for the better . . . and ah, what folks then would have given to have a family restaurant like Ciro's on Cass Lake Rd. . . . It is one of the best low-priced Italian restaurants in the lake regions . . . offering dishes you'll seldom find any- where. Four years ago, Ciro's be- came a reality by brothers Ciro (Geno) and Jerry Spigno . . . It had been a Chinese restaurant seating 100 . . . and mustachio'd brothers Ciro and Jerry have a 118-seater that now also provides cocktails from its recently-acquired bar .. . amid brown paneling, stucco walls and table cloths alternating between solid red and checked. Delta Spigno, Ciro's and Jerry's mother, comes in three days a week to make some of the dishes like _Capatelli and the bread .. . Dad, Dominic Spigno, is there every morning mak- ing many of the sauces and soups. Ciro's, with a menu that includes veal, chicken, ribs, seafood, pasta, salads, sandwiches, steaks, chops, pizza, desserts, Fettuccini Alfredo with white creamy sauce, etc.. . . takes pride in the preparation of its food . . . People who order de- lights that take just a while longer are very glad they waited . . . Ciro's makes the breading for veal, its own lasagna, its -own clam sauce, its own eggplant prepara- tion . . . and so much more. The family even makes its own desserts . . . How- ever, when the waitresses ask if they want dessert, some of the customers laugh . . . they've eaten so much there isn't room for another thin noodle. They opened March 21, 1978 ... having never owned a restaurant be- fore but each working in separate dining spots ... and getting to know the distinct customer likes and dislikes ... Portions were gauged on what they themselves would like to be served for the low prices they'd like to pay•, Ciro's from the outside is unpretentious-looking ... Even so on the inside ... There is really noth- ing about its decor you would want to remember ... but the food ... that's another story ... Its homemade Italian yum- mies will bring you back because the tasty delici- ousness is a freshness that many places lack. Complete meals are much the thing at Ciro's . . . not just a side dish and bread . . . and Ciro and Jerry keep their overhead down so exorbitant prices don't have to be charged for ultra-fine dishes. Take the Shrimp Par- migiana for example .. . Here is a dish you won't find at very many places . . . shrimp sauteed in a butter, tomato and cheese sauce .. . It's one of the "custom- made" delicacies not found on the menu . . . and has be- come a big favorite among. people who know about Ciro's . . . because of its de- liciously different and fresh taste . . . With seafood prices as high as they are, Ciro's is still able to keep its price under $10. Remember now that at Ciro's, you don't get orders just enough to fill an oral cavity . . . The portions are large to go along with the ( - palate-savoring flavor. Cass Lake Keego / Harbor brought me memories of yesteryear . . . Now Ciro's brings the pleasantness of home-cooked family dining for unforgettable remembr- ance- to come back again. HOPE DETROIT Ex- press soccer team is better than its owner Sonny Van Arnem's ability to toss a party . . . Warm pop, warm beer and warm table wine in plastic glasses . . . at the beautiful 50-year-old con- temporary home he recently moved into. Ever have a potato salad sandwich on rye? . . . Or nutted cheeseballs with toothpicks and no crackers? . . . Not even silverware .. . The vegetable and dip were good, though . . . Guess anything would be if you're hungry . . . That is, any- thing but a potato salad sandwich! Our waitress, Margo Welch, was a pleasant, ef- ficient and courteous lass who is indicative of the well-mannered and con- genial help at Ciro's ... I wanted -- something different and ordered Veal Al Ciro ... which Margo brought for a pleasant tastebud satis- faction It is a combi- nation of veal and eggplant topped with melted mozzarella cheese ...
