A Nuclear Stance RABBI HERTZ from the University of Cin- cinnati and was ordained with honors at the Hebrew Union College in 1942. He earned his PhD in religious education from Northwest- ern University in 1948, and in 1967, Hebrew Union Col- lege conferred upon him an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. In Detroit, Dr. Hertz has served on the boards of di- rectors of many civic and communal organizations, among them the American Jewish Committee, Jewish Community Council, De- troit Institute of Technol- ogy, Economic Club of De- troit, Junior Achievement, United Foundation, Inter- faith Action Council, Boys' Clubs of Detroit, and Michi- gan Cancer Foundation. He is a past president of the Wranglers' Club of Detroit clergymen and was a member of former Governor Romney's Advisory Com- mittee on Ethics and Mor- als. Since 1970, Rabbi Hertz has been adjunct professor of Jewish thought at the University of Detroit. In 1980, a chair in Jewish studies was endowed in his honor, with Rabbi Hertz being appointed distin- guished professor, com- mencing July 1, 1982. Bnai David Marks 90th JERUSALEM (JNI) — A proposal to build a new set- tlement in the Besor region near the international bor- der has been submitted to the Inter-Ministerial Com- mittee on Settlement by Raannan Weitz, chairman of the Jewish Agency's set- tlement department. Weitz also proposed the development of a port in the Katif region of the Gaza Strip, and tourism facilities such as those that had been planned for Yamit. Some 20 agricultural settlements are planned for the north- western Besor region. Nuclear Pact MONTREAL (JTA) — Energy Minister Marc Lalonde has announced that Egypt and Canada will sign an agreement for peaceful nuclear coopera- tion, paving the way for fu- ture sales of Canadian nu- clear reactors to Egypt. CHICAGO (JTA) — The Chicago Board of Rabbis has adopted a resolution calling on "our government to pursue vigorously at all international forums the goal of ending the prolifera- tion of nuclear weapons, and ultimately banning nu- clear armaments."
