GENEVA (JTA) — A
threat by the United States
to walk out of the World
Health Organization
(WHO) last week resulted
in modification of a resolu-
tion condemning Israel for
annexing East Jerusalem
and the Golan Heights and
calling, in effect, for sanc-
tions against the Jewish
state.
The sanctions clause was
deleted after the U.S. repre-
sentative, John Bryant,
branded the draft resolution
"inaccurate and offensive"
and warned that the U.S.
would leave the organiza-
tion for an indefinite period
and review its financial and
technical support for the
United Nations agency.
The resolution, sponsored
by 29 Arab and Third World
countries was adopted by a
committee of the WHO's
annual assembly here by a
vote of 60-27 with 24
abstentions.

WASHINGTON — Mor-
ton I. Abramowitz, a career
foreign service officer and
President Reagan's
nominee for ambassador to
Indonesia, has apparently
fallen out of favor with Ad-
ministration officials fol-
lowing the circulation of a
controversial memo at the
White House.
The memo misrepresents
his views as more liberal
than they actually are, ac-
cording to the nominee's col-
leagues. Some State De-
partment officials believe
the memo was given to In-
donesian officials, who have
not approved the nomina-
tion.

Reagan Proposes Change
to Allow Prayer in School
WASHINGTON —
President Reagan this week
formally proposed a Con-
stitutional amendment
permitting organized
prayer in public schools.
The amendment, first
mentioned by the President
two weeks ago, would state:
"Nothing in this Con-
stitution shall be construed
to prohibit individual or
group prayer in public
schools or other public in-
stitutions. No person shall
be required by the United
States or by any state to
participate in prayer.
Meanwhile, the Ameri-
can Civil Liberties Union
in Michigan is asking At-
torney General Frank
Kelley to challenge a
class taught in Jackson
County's Western School
District.
The 12th grade elective
course includes a week-long
segment on "controversies
in science" which includes
material on "creation sci-
ence," the biblical account
of creation.
Fame and tranquility can
never be bedfellows.
