Miss Landers, who earlier this month acknowledged that she had been recycling revised versions . of 15- year-old letters in her ad- vice eolumns without label- ing them as such for the past 18 months, has received thousands of letters and phone calls urging her to "carry on," according to the Field Newspaper Syndi- cate. "Eppie: The Story of Ann Landers" (Putnam) offers a candid look at how Ann Landers, nee Eppe Friedman, began her career more than 25 years ago and also provides a fascinating picture of what it was like growing up with a mother who gave ad- vice to 70,000,000 people. From Eppie's famous feud with her identical twin sister, Abigail Van Buren, to Margo's own life as the child of a workaholic father and celebrity mother to the full story of her parents' divorce after 36 years of marriage and her own two divorces and remar- riage td actor Ken How- ard, "Eppie" becomes a multiple biography of an exceptional family. Ann Landers started life as Esther Pauline Fried- man, one half of the egg that also became Pauline Esther Friedman. They soon be- came' "Eppie" and "Popo." They shared clothes, friends, dates and even a honeymoon after their dou- ble wedding ceremony. In 1954 the Lederer fam- ily moved to Chicago, partly to get away from Popo's overwhelming presence in Eau Claire, Wis. Eppie was restless but soon found what she wanted to do right in The Chicago Sun-Times. She would volunteer to help "Ann Landers" answer her mail. But the "Ann, Land- ers" columnist had just died. Conservative Rabbis Reported in Short Supply KIAMESHA LAKE, N.Y. (JTA) — The Conservative branch of Judaism has a continued shortage of newly ordained rabbis which necessitates seeking new spiritual leaders in 104 larger and smaller congre- gations in the United States and Canada, according to a report presented to the Rabbinical Assembly's con- vention here. Rabbi Gilbert Epstein, di- rector of the assembly's community -services, said that despite the fact that the Jewish Theological .Semi- nary of America will be or- daining 27 new rabbis this month, "We will continue to be short of rabbis and this year's ordination hardly meets our immediate re- quirements." Econothic Aid WASHINGTON (JTA) — The State Department has decided to release the re- maining half of Israel's eco, nomic aid for the 1982 fiscal year, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) announced. Israel will now receive $400 mil- lion due it. So, with 20 other contes- tants she entered the competition to become her successor — and won. Eppie had never held a job, much less written a line for publi- cation; her qualifications, according to Margo, were that "she was opinionated, sure of herself and not av- erse to minding other people's business." After a few months in her new job without any secretarial help, Eppie accepted Popo's offer to assist with the mail. She taught her the whole op- eration. Then the ax fell, and one ,of the more famous sister feuds on record began. It was an- nounced that Popo was starting a similar column, "Dear Abby," in the San Francisco Chronicle. For many years, writing as Ann Landers, Eppie ad- vised troubled married couples to stay together — to get counseling and work hard to save the marriage. Then, in a poignant column that stunned her readers, she announced the end of her own marriage to Jules, her husband of 36 years. Margo Howard attended Brandeis University. She has been a columnist for the Chicago Tribune Syndicate and later for the Chicago Daily News. • • • • • • * • • • • • • • have them ▪ • REMEMBER YOUR AFFAIR • • with • • • • COMPUTER PORTRAITS • • • • Framed Pictures, • • Posters, T-Shirts, Etc. • • • BANQUETS, PARTIES 4 : • 'WEDDINGS, SHOWERS • • MITZVAHS, ETC. 4)- • • • • PHOTOCGaRlIAPHIC . •COMPUTER IMAGES, INC.•. °' (313) 851-5977 .° Also located in Tally Hall, • • Farmington Hills • • •rn•••••• Right iR Your own Driveway! 1 THE TUNE -UP MAN Certified by the National Automotive Institute of Excellence Comes to your home or office with the "garage-on-wheels."
