THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Envoy Promotes Interfaith Ties By HEIDI PRESS Imagine a soft-spoken, grandfatherly, proper British geVeman. Could there be a beeter shaliakh to promote interfaith under- standing? Probably not. That's most likely the reason that Lu- cien Harris was sent to this country as_a representative of the Israel Interfaith Committee. During his visit to Detroit this week, arranged through the cooperation of • The SHEI. ROTT ORCHESTRA a- Contemporary—Big Band Sounds – Featuring T.V. & Recording Artist VICKIE CARROLL "Professional Entertakinwt" 354-0110 354-0111 the Detroit Zionist Federa- tion and Mercy College of Detroit, Harris spoke of the activities of the interfaith committee. He said the major goal of the committee is to promote peace and friendship between the "denominations Jewish, Christian' and Moslem." To achieve this goal, Har- ris said the committee spon- sors seminars, lectures, vis- its and acts as an "educa- tional catalyst" whose job is to "educate the educator." Comprised of 50 volun- teers, who he called "opin- ion molders," the committee sends emissaries to the U.S. and Western Europe to promote friendship by speaking primarily to Christian groups. While in the U.S., he will go to Chicago, Houston and San Francisco, where he will be the guest of the California Christian Com- mittee for Israel. He also will represent Israel at the Rotary International Insti- tute in Boca Raton, Fla. He added. that M6slems don't work as actively in creating face-to-face rela- tionships as Christians and Jews do.. Asked what he hoped the future would bring for the interfaith committee, Har- ris said "the active partici- pation of Arab intellectu- als.". Another role of the com- mittee Harris said, is to act as a liaison for foreign vis- itors. He recalled an inci- dent in which a Greek Or- thodox priest was coming to Israel and wanted to meet his church's patriarch. Har- ris said he arranged the meeting for the priest, who was so appreciative of the gesture, he asked Harris. to escort his tour. Palestinian Team Touring France PARIS (JTA) -- A "Pales- tinian national soccer team" defeated a French team last week in a game in a public stadium on the out- skirts of Paris. It is the first time that the Palestinian team is touring Western Europe and playing local teams. Several hundred people attended the match, but there were no demonstra- tions or disturbances. The Palestinian team, whose tour was organized by a leftwing sports federation to promote "Palestinian sports and cultural activities," was to play three games in France.
