G.A. Richards . . . This new
selling tool impressed him
so strongly that in 1926 he
acquired an option to buy
the station . . . In an early
move, he had a complete
ground-level studio built in
showrooms of the General
Motors Bldg. and staged an
elaborate five-hour dedicat-
ory broadcast.
Sensing that radio was
more than an entertain-
ment and advertising
medium, Richards recog-
nized its public service
potential and soon WJR was
being heralded as "The
Goodwill Station."

In 1927, WJR became
part of the Blue Network
of the National Broad-
casting Co. with the
added programming ex-
panding the station's
audiences ... To demon-
strate the immediacy and
relevancy of broadcast-
ing, WJR devoted the
entire day of July 11, 1927
to broadcast the celebra-
tion of Lindberg's
triumph from his New
York-to-Paris flight.

The Best of Everything

In 1928, WJR became
first tenant of the glamor-
ous Fisher Tower on Grand
Blvd., with the most modern
technical facility in the
world occupying the
entire 28th floor . . . The
familiar announcements
that WJR is airing from the
"Golden tower of the Fisher
Building" are still heard
daily.
Also in 1928, WJR was
assigned an exclusive clear
channel frequency, 760 kil-
locycles . . . It is significant
that Richards was a 1929
pioneer in equipping auto-
mobiles with radios so that
listeners could carry their
favorite programs with
them wherever they
traveled . . . The marriage
of his two major interests,
cars and radios, fittingly
appropriate from the
world's motor capital, had
deep impact on both pro-
gramming and listener
habits that continues to this
day.
Power continued to be in-
creased with a new WJR
transmitter and antenna
tower built in the downriver
area in 1935 upping it to its
present 50,000 watts .. .
WJR's affiliation with the
Columbia Broadcasting
System the same year con-
tinued until 1958 . . . The
station was purchased by
Capital Cities Broadcasting
in 19 64.

.

Corridor walls and
showcases throughout
WJR studio facilities are
lined with hundreds of
awards won by the sta-
tion and its staff for out-
standing broadcasting
and journalistic feats .. .
In March, Billboard-
magazine, an interna-
tional newsweekly cover-
ing the broadcast indus-
try, proclaimed WJR as
"Radio Station of the
Year" in its major market
category in the U.S. and
Canada ... Dual honors
came with the naming of
WJR's J.P. McCarthy as

"Radio Personality of the
Year" for the second
time.

Besides Joe, WJR radio
boasts a seemingly endless
array of talent . . . Jimmy
Launce, Bob Hines, Gene
Elzy, Mike Whorf, Jay
Roberts, Hal Youngblood
and others.
CHARLIE PAPPAS at
the Rialto Cafe, Woodward
and Nine Mile, tells folks to
try Bleu cheese dressing
with his American fries .. .
He remembers back in 1957
while a waiter at the
Book-Cadillac Hotel
downtown and captain at
the Book Casino . . . when
folks ordered it with their
cottage fries.
