The officers, ranging in rank from lieutenant to major, all with distin- guished combat records, ac- cused the government of sending incompletely- trained recruits into the trouble areas without riot control equipment, except fire arms which they some- times used indiscriminately with fatal results. The officers, who ap- peared at a press conference arranged by the Peace Now movement, declined to give details of specific instances. They said they provided de- tails to the army's chief legal officer after their re- . . . where art doesn't stop on the walls. Bloomfield Plaza 6666 Orchard Lake Rd. quest for a meeting with De- fense Minister Ariel Sharon was refused. The Defense Minstry said it would hold a full scale investigation of the charges and study the evidence submitted to the army adjutant general. According to the officers, recruits confronted by stone-throwing Arabs, have no means of defending themselves except with weapons. Although stand- ing orders require them to fire at the legs of the demon- strators, they often "panic" and fire directly into the crowds. Since March, at least 15 Arabs, mostly teenagers, have been fatally shot by Is- raeli troops and many more have been wounded. The officers also con- demned the behavior of Jewish settlers in the occu- pied territories, charging that they harass and physi- cally abuse local Arabs and open fire on them from jeeps or buses. Earlier, Chief of Staff Gen. Rafael Eitan de- fended the army's use of live ammunition to quell riots on the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Eitan, appearing before the Knesset's Foreign Af- fairs and Security Commit- tee, said investigations show there had been no de- viation from standing or- ders by Israeli troops. He said those orders banned the use of live ammunition unless all other methods of riot control failed and the soldiers were in immediate danger. Re- cently, Israeli forces have resorted to rubber bullets but on some occasions they proved inadequate. Eitan faced tough ques- tions and criticism from Labor Alighment members of the committee.
