Cut UN Contribution If World Body Expels Israel
U.S. Will
WASHINGTON (JTA) — to participate in any matter,
Congress has gone on record the United States will sus-
as warning the United Na- pend its participation in
tions that if the General As- that body and withhold all
sembly or any UN spe- funds for it.
The House approved a
cialized agency expels Is-
rael or denies Israel's right resolution containing the
warning by a 401-3 vote. A
similar resolution was
adopted by the Senate on
April 14.
Rep. Dante Fascell (D-
Fla.) warned there is reason
to believe that the General

Assembly may be pressed
this fall to take action on a
resolution expelling Israel.
He said if it did so, it "would
trigger United States with-
drawal" from the General
Assembly.
Rep. Jack Kemp (R-
N.Y.) who with Sen.
Daniel Moynihan (D-
N.Y.) authored the meas-
ure, said "the real threat
is not to Israel, but to the
integrity of the United
Nations. If the General
Assembly should attempt
illegally to expel Israel,
the United Nations would
be casting aside what
vestiges of respectability
and honor it may retain."
The resolution adopted by
the House differs from the
Senate version in that it de-
leted a reference to action
against "any other demo-
cratic state." Fascell ex-
plained that while the
United States is concerned
Jews Join Call
for U.S.-Soviet
Nuclear Freeze
NEW YORK (JTA) — An
increasing number of
Jewish representatives are
calling for a halt to the nu-
clear arms race through a
freeze on nuclear weapons
by the United States and
the Soviet Union.
The Jewish Community
Relations Council of
Greater Philadelphia, at a
recent meeting of its Board
of Directors, adopted a reso-
lution which stated: "No
issue threatens our exist-
ence as Jews, Americans
and world citizens more
than the specter of nuclear
warfare. For the Jewish
community, discussion of a
nuclear holocaust is more
than a metaphor.
"Our history teaches us
that man is capable of per-
petuating unspeakable acts
and, further, that silence in
the face of inhumanity is
equivalent to complicity in
that injustice."
In a related action, more
than 100 religious and secu-
lar Jewish leaders, includ-
ing dozens of rabbis, three
members of Congress, four
Nobel Prize winners and
leaders of Jewish organiza-
tions have signed a "Shalom
Aleichem" statement urg-
ing all American Jews to
address the issue of ther-
monuclear world disaster
and the need for controlling
and reversing the arms
race.

about the universality of
the UN, "if we are con-
cerned here about °Israel,
then let us name our con-
cern and not couch it in
broad langauge."
However, it is believed
that there was a fear that
efforts might be made to
embarrass supporters of Is-
rael by using the resolution
in support of South Africa
which has been suspended
by the General Assembly.
The Senate is expected to go
along with the change.
In America, it's not how
