KEEPING THE
DREAM ALIVE

By Don McEvoy

"

TWO EVENTS

here have been two

T events in the past half

century one Christian the other
Jewish. which have tremendous im-
plications for both Christians and
Jews. The Jewish event was the
establishment of the State of Israel.
The Christian event was the
Holocaust.
The man making that statement
was Tom Hogan of San Jose, Califor-
nia. I'm not certain that I have given
you a direct quote, but I am confi-
dent it is a credible paraphrase. The
words captured my full attention.
The facts were being stated with a
clarity that was startling to me. I had
never heard it formulated exactly that
way before.
Hogan is a generation younger
than myself. He was born at least a
decade and a half after either of these
hifi'ges of history had occured. He
was looking at them without the
blinders of personal pain, guilt, or
self-excusing rationalization that is
typical of those of us who lived
through those years of tragedy and
triumph. -
The establishment of the State of
Israel was a Jewish event with
tremendous implications for Chris-
tians. No Christian, perhaps, can
ever fully comprehend the meaning
of Israel to Jews. But we've got to try
a lot harder to do so than we have
thus far. Israel is a political State, but
it is much more than that. It is the
fulfillment of a religious reality. It is
the authentication of the daily prayer
of every Jew for the past two-
thousand years, "Next year in
Jerusalem." It is not just a tiny piece

of real estate in a remote section of
the Middle East. It is an essential and
inseparable part of Judaism itself.
People, Torah, and Land are an in-
divisible unity. Christians must come
to understand that fact.
No longer can we hold to the
fallacy of "t-he wandering Jew." No
longer can we act if Judaism was
superceclecl by the advent of Chris-
tianity. All Christian theology mu -st
be reformulated in the light of the
reality of Israel
The Holocaust, the wanton
murder of 6,000,000 human beings
for no other reason than the fact that
they were Jews, was a Christian
event.
I recoil in horror from that allega-
tion, but it is true. The Holocaust oc-
cured in the heart of Christian
civilization. The attempted annihila-
tion of the Jewish people was made
possible by the legacy of anti-
semitism promulgated in the
literature of Christendom. With only
a few heroic exceptions the Church
people of the Third Reich either ac-
tively participated or quietly acquies-
ed to the program of genocide. Few
of the perpetrators ever understood
the contradiction between the faith
they proclaimed and the terror they
wrought.
Jews were the victims. The moral
challenge of the Death Camps and
the crematoria belong to the rest of
us.

Emirates' View

PARIS (ZINS) — The
president of the United
Arab Emirates told a
Paris-based Arab news-
paper last week that the
Soviet Union was not a
threat to the Persian Gulf
states and the Soviet
presence in Afghanistan
was legitimate.
He added that the estab-
lishment of an American
rapid deployment force was
an encroachment on the
sovereignty and national
pride of the Persian Gulf
states.

Fund for PLO?

NEW YORK (ZINS). —
Columnist Jack Anderson
reports that the Palestine
Liberation Organization
has formed a United Pales-
tine Appeal. He says that
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait,
QatAr and the United Arab
emirates are asking U.S.
firms to contribute to the
fund.
Anderson says the U.S.
Internal Revenue Service
has recognized the fund as a
tax exempt charitable
organization.
