• THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Gala Event Marked Israel's 34th Several thousand mem- - bers of the Detroit area Jewish community cele- brated Israel's 34th birth- day on Sunday with a fes- tive party and parade at the Southfield Civic Center. In his welcoming remarks to the audience, event chairman Michael Feldman said the celebration helped to unite the Jewish com- munity as more than 30 organizations participated in the event. "We must commit ourselves to- the creative survival of the state of Israel," he said, and he thanked the city of Southfield for its help in hosting the event. Congressman William Brodhead (D-17th District) gave the keynote address. In a brief speech he pro- claimed, "It is not Israel's 34 years that count, but the Jewish people's 5,742 years of tradition and history that count." He said the victims of the Holocaust did- not have a land to call their own or a Jewish army to defend them. "Israel is part of the debt that the whole world owes for the Holocaust." He said the U.S. must make it clear that it is to- tally committed to Israel. "We must stop the insane policy of selling arms here and there and everywhere in the Middle East. "We must work together for peace. I pledge to do ev- erything in my power to stop these arms sales." He added, "We need peace for the sake of Israel; peace for the sake of the Arabs; peace for the sake of the whole world."
