Leonard Seidenman, executive vice president of HIAS, said that the board of HIAS decided to accept the recommendation of its executive committee to "re- turn to the traditional pol- icy" of aiding all Soviet Jews who upon arriving in Vienna opt to go to coun- tries other than Israel. He added that the board asked the executive com- mittee to try to find alterna- tives to achieve greater aliya to Israel and would ac- cept any new plan that would help achieve that goal. In a related develop- ment, some 200,000 per- sons rallied Sunday at Dag Hammerskjold Plaza across from the United Nations for the 11th annual Solidarity Sunday for Soviet Jewry. At the rally in Dag Ham- marskjold Plaza, speaker after speaker stressed the increasing urgency of the Soviet Jewry issue, which according to United States Ambassador to the UN, Jeane Kirkpatrick, "has grown increasingly desper- ate." Kirkpatrick, one of many political figures and noted dignitaries to address the rally, said the United States Administration will "not acquiesce" to the deteriorat- ing conditions Soviet Jews have been subjected to. Israel's Ambassador to the United States, Moshe Arens said that while the door to emigration has vir- tually been closed and the exodus of Soviet Jews from the USSR has diminished to a trickle, this has not stop- ped the Jewish community's desire to emigrate. Meanwhile, the Soviet Mission's compound in the Riverdale Section of The Bronx is no longer located at 344 W. 255th St. The compound hasn't moved, the name of the street has disappeared. Borough President Stan- ley Simon had the name of the streed renamed One Sharansky Square in honor of the imprisoned Soviet Jewish dissident Anatoly Shcharansky.
