MOTHERS d AY at
TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Golan Heights Druze, now
in the 16th week of their
strike to protest the exten-
sion of Israeli law to the
region, were reported this
week to have accepted a
compromise solution to the
problem of Israeli identity
cards which the Israeli
authorities insist they have.
Under , the proposal,
worked out by an Israeli
Druze judge from Haifa, the
Golan Druze would be given
a choice of what nationality
and religion should be
entered on their cards. The
Golan residents insist they
are Druze by religion,
Arabic by language and
ethnic background, and Sy-
rian by nationality. Those
who claim Syrian national-
ity would not be entitled to
welfare benefits from Israel.
The proposals are re-
ported to have been for-
warded to the Israeli
authorities for their exam-
ination and possible ac-
ceptance.

MEXICO CITY (JTA) —
The Tarbut Hebrew school
here was evacuated during
Israel Independence Day
celebrations last week when
a time bomb was discovered
on the premises after an
anonymous telephone
warning.
Police dismantled the
bomb and the celebrations
were resumed without
further interruption.
The incident coincided
with ceremonies at the
presidential residence
where President Jose Lopez
Portillo presented the Elias
Sourasky awards to three
Mexican academicians for
outstanding work in sci-
ence, art and literature.
The President and
Foreign Minister Jorge
Castaneda also sent cables
to President Yitzhak Navon
in Jerusalem congratulat-
ing Israel on the 34th an-
niversary of its indepen-
dence and expressing hope
for peace in the Middle East.

Anti-Semite
Fined in France
PARIS (JTA) — A bar
owner in Besancon was
fined $5,000 Francs ($840)
after a local court found him
guilty of incitement to ra-
cial hatred and racist prac-
tices.
Claude Ourdot, 54, posted
a notice on the bar's door
stating that his establish-
ment is out of bounds to
monkeys to two civil liber-
ties organizations which
complained to the police.
The district attorney had
asked the court to impose a
stiff fine because history
has shown that racism often
starts with a bar notice,
then proceeds to yellow
Stars of David and finally
ends in death camps.
The court agreed with the
prosecution and imposed
what by local standards, is a
heavy fine.
