THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 22 Friday, May 1, 1982 Jews of Guatemala Fear Outbreak of Anti-Semitism MEXICO CITY — The appearance of two anti- Semitic articles in the Guatemalan press in the wake of the military coup earlier this year has dis- turbed Guatemala's Jewish community, according to reports by the American Jewish Committee's office here for Mexico and Central America. "The Greatest Coalition in History," circulated by J "a tasteful experience" Featuring the finest tasting Impoited and Domestic Candy • Blums • Perugina • Moreau • Foucher • Jamin • Grenadier Servi-Prensa, a Guatema- lan news service, charges that Jews constantly have tried to introduce vile and immoral currents of thought and action among non-Jews. This news service is used by papers in neighboring El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua as well as in Guatemala it- self. Another article, head- lined "The Jewish Hebrew People," alleges that ". . . Whoever has read one of the differnet editions of the books of 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion' will know the truth, the reality (of) . . . the international Jew; and who and what is the di- rect author of the world's evil . . ." "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" is a well- known 19th Century anti-Semitic tract, a forgery of the Czarist police. The appearance of anti- Semitic articles comes to the peak of Guatemala's political unrest. Many be- lieve these articles are the work of extreme right wing elements in the country, seeking to exploit domestic turmoil to promote hatred of Jews. According to Jacky Bigel, spokesman for the Associa- tion of Jewish Students in Bavaria, Jews attending West German universities are also exposed to anti- Semitism and cannot live without fear unless they conceal their identity. Bigel said it was commonplace that Jewish religious serv- ices could be conducted only under heavy police guard in synagogues protected by high fences. Bigel made his remarks in a declaration on the 34th anniversary of Israel's in- dependence. He said the students' association re- gretted that the Bonn gov- ernment was moving away from its historical special relationship with Israel. .
