Paris to Get Jewish Museum Israeli Unions Plan Strike, Prices of Commodities Up TEL AVIV (JTA) — The 13 largest trade unions in the country have given two weeks' notice of a planned strike which, if effected, will paralyze the country. The workers, supported by the Histadrut, are pro- testing government and employers decisions to can- cel, as from last month, payment of an extra five percent wage to compensate for the gap between cost of living allowance payments and the increase in the cost of living index itself. COL payments are peg- ged at between 70 and 80 percent of the index in- crease. The Finance Minister claims that the five per- cent payment was a one- time payment. The His- tadrut claims that it should have been a con- tinuing monthly pay- ment. Under Israel's labor laws, unions must give 14 days notice of planned strikes. In Jerusalem, a nine per- cent rise in the price of fuel and basic commodities took effect Tuesday. The Finance Ministry said the increases were necessary to avoid fuel sub- sidies and higher subsidies for food. They are expected to raise the consumer price index by 1.5 percent during May and June. Public transportation prices will go up by 25 per- cent, beginning May 16 and similar increases are ex- pected in the price of postal and telephone services. Th fiiel price rise is expected to increase electric utility bills by six percent. The Energy Ministry said that the higher price of fuel reflected the 10 percent de- valuation of the Shekel relative to the U.S. dollar in mid-March.
