It is the result of serious efforts to as- sure a thorough and fac- tual documentation of the second oldest synagogue here and one of the oldest in the coun- try. It receives emphasis in the definition of the 120 theme by Rabbi Irwin Groner, the congregation's rabbi, who prefaces the vol- ume with: "The years granted to Moses were 120; at his de- ath, the Bible tells us that `His eyes were undimmed and his vigor unabated." Hence, the customary felici- tation in our tradition on a birthday or anniversary: ad meah v'esrim, which means `until 120,' the years of vigor granted to Moses. "But what can be said when one has fortunately reached the 120th anniver- sary? For this, too, Jewish tradition has an appropri- ate blessing: ken yirbu — `May the years, and the blessings, and the joys mul- tiply.' " This historical record — all of the 1,800 mem- bers will be provided with copies and the Con- servative Movement's leaders have already indicated a desire to have it shared with the leaders of the national member- ship — is the product of several people. It began with the facts gathered by Eli Grad when he was the executive director of self a well-informed De- troiter who has risen in her editorial work wit- the local community, she' has given skill and devo- tion in editing this vol- ume. Having specialized '- also in art history, for which she earned her Master's degree, her work together with Kin- ney and Primeau added' to the WSU Press another- of its great artistic works. In the past two years, dur- ing which, under the lead- ership of Dr. Bernard Goldman a vast library of Judaica has been publishPri WSU Press gave special tention to Jewish train' tional art works. The Shaarey Zedek history gains a place among them. The rabbis who served (Continued on Page 11) BETTE ROTH the congregation at the time of its 100th anniver- sary. The major work in compiling the text, in the collection and writing about the experiences of the last 20 years, was done by Bette Roth. The laborious Bette Roth task already won acclaim from those who read galley proofs. It shows ability to do research; it had the re- markable result of securing numerous photographs, many very old, which would have been lost had it not been for their retention' for incorporation in the Shaarey Zedek history. In design, this WSU Press volume merits a national award. Both in the manner in which photos were grouped, their classifica- tion, the clarity of the entire project, lend glory to an im- portant effort. Richard Kinney, who with Mary Primeau de- signed the volume, earns recognition for a profes- sional attainment of great merit. Carol Altman Brom- berg has a major role in the production of this meritorious work. Her- * * * Carol Bromberg, SZ Book's Editor • Born and raised in De- troit, Carol Altman Brom- berg remembers childhood visits to radio station WJLB and her grandparents' Yid- dish radio program, the Altman Jewish Hour, about which Philip Slomovitz tells this story: "In 1936, Hyman Altman had a profitable spot buyer, the Republican party in be- half of Alf Landon. He de- livered the prepared speech with gusto and his usual enthusiasm. Then he pro- claimed, 'Dos iz geven a bat- zolter annonsment, ich voot far Ruzevelt' — 'This was a paid announcement. I vote for Roosevelt.' " Mrs. Bromberg is a graduate of the University of Michigan and later earned a master's degree at Wayne State University in art history. She has contin- ued her studies in ancient art, teaching at Wayne, speaking to groups at the Detroit Institute of Arts, writing and delivering pap- ers at national conferences on archeology and art his- tory. As an editor for the Wayne State University Press, her recent credits in- clUde a volume based on Slomovitz's weekly columns in The Jewish News, sev- eral histories of Romanian art, and the history of Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
