STRAIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE .. . . Bond Leaders Mark April 25th A traumatic day on the Jewish calendar, somberly dispatched into recorded history as a dramatic crav- ing for peace, was marked here with solemnity also as a time for action. Sunday, April 25, was oc- casion for admonition to Jewry that what has been abandoned can be dupli- cated as a measure of Is- rael's strength by the de- termined and dedicated will of the Jewish people. The history-making day was occasion for reaffirma- tion of this community's interest in Israel and com- mitment to efforts to assist the Jewish state eco- nomically at a gathering of Israel Bond Organization leaders at the home of Ruth and Sam Rich, Sunday af- ternoon. Hosting the gathering were the son and daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Rich, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Rich. An important message to the gathering by Israel Prime Minister Menahem Begin, urging continued support of the Israel Bond efforts, was read to the gathering by Ron Rich. The sacrifices made by Is- rael in the withdrawal from Sinai were enumerated by the guest speaker, Nicholas Lane, a member of the board of governors of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry, who was a leader in British Jewish ranks before settling in Pittsburgh, Pa., four years ago. He stated that the $20 billion cost of erecting the settlements in Sinai will now have to be reconstructed for the evacuated settlers, some of them in Judea and Samaria. He indicated that Israel Bond investments will be needed for that purpose and therefore urged increased support for investment ef- forts through Israel Bonds. D. Dan Kahn, who presided, gave a thorough analysis of achievements in Israel with the aid of Israel Bond funds and reported on extensive responses to the movement's appeals as an indication that Metropoli- tan Detroit Jewry is com- mitted to unstinted support for Israel. William Cohen, the new director of the Israel Bonds Organization here, an- nounced that a newly- issued Israel Bond, the Var- iable Rate Issue (VRI), is available for purchase by trustees for employee bene- fit funds and union funds. The new bond pays a minimum of 71/2 per cent Einstein Reception for Bonds Shown at Sunday's Israel Bond event are, from left, Philip Slomovitz, speaker Nicholas Lane, Henry Dorfman, D. The bond is currently paying 12 per- cent. Initial subscription for a VRI must be $25,000. The bond matures in 12 Years. However, it can be redeemed after three years from the date of purchase on 120-days notice.
