"The Religious Heritage of America" (A.S. Barnes & Co.), authored by Albert M. Shulman, consists of eight sections, including "Land of Many Religions," "The Pro- testant Structure" and "The American Scene." The early settlers of America, according to the author, were: 1607, The Virginia Colony (Anglican); 1615, Manhattan Colony (Dutch Reformed Church); 1620, The Plymouth Colony (Puritan); 1628, Massachu- setts Bay Colony (Congre- gational); 1634, Maryland (Catholic); 1636, Rhode Is- land (Baptist); 1681, Pennsylvania (Quakers). I would like to add to that list the Jews who set- tled in America in 1654, although they did not found a Jewish colony. I also would like to point out that the Pilgrims set- tled in the New World in 1620 and the Puritans in 1630. - It is interesting to note that the Jews preceded the Quakers by 27 years and fol- lowed the Puritans by only 24. Included in this study is the religion of the native American Indians. Mana was the force that influenced everything and everybody. Taboos deflected threatening dangers. Visions helped bring good fortunes. The Indians be- lieved that the world was inhabited by spirits, de- mons and unseen living forces. The Indians; moreover, believed that certain in- dividuals were endowed with supernatural pow- ers. They included the shamans, the priests and the prophets. Thorough is the author's examination of certain Christian doctrines and be- liefs. The doctrine of the Trinity, for instance, af- firms a "belief in the three fold nature or essence of God — the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost or Spirit." According to this doctrine, "All three are of one unity, one substance, co-equal and co-divine. Yet each exists separately and is marked by its own char- acteristics and operates in- dependently." Historically, not all Christians accepted Trinitarianism. Thus, Arius rejected the belief in Christ's divinity and claimed that he was inferior to God. Similarly, the adop- tionist theory held that Jesus was God's adopted son and not a part of the Godhead. Even the Ebion- ites, the early Hebrew Christians, considered Jesus as a prophet and not the Messiah. Comprehensive is the survey of the American Christian churches. It in- cludes, among others, the Protestant Episcopal Church; the Methodist Church; the Unitarian- Universalist Association; the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. The chapter on "The Jewish • Religion" chronicles the history of the Jewish religion from the time of the Patriarch Abraham (1500 BCE) to the ordination of the first woman as rabbi by the Mayors Parley in Jerusalem NEW YORK — Mayors from eight American cities and one county executive have joined colleagues from Israel, Switzerland, Austria and Sweden at the third an- nual Jerusalem Conference of Mayors, which runs through Wednesday. The U.S. delegation to the conference includes: James Ferguson, of Provo, Utah; William Fox, of East Brunswick, N.J.; James McNulty, of Scranton, Pa.; Raul Martinez, of Hialeah, Fla.; Tom Moody, of Colum- bus, Ohio; Richard Verbic, of Elgin, Ill.; George Vuk- ovich, of Youngstown,•0hio; Joseph Walsh, of Warwick, R.I.; and Edward J. Rut- kowski, county executive for Erie County, N.Y. Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Reli- gion in 1972. It also relates the history of the Jews in their ancient homeland and in the United States. But it fails to men- tion their history elsewhere, including the Holocaust and refers to the state of Israel as a "church state." Regrettably, the survey includes "Hasidism" among the "religious movements of a strange and bizarre na- ture" that proliferate America. Equally unfortu- nate is the survey's jux- taposing "Hasidism" with groups like the Aetherius Society and the Black Mus- lims. The former teaches magic, divination and rein- carnation and the latter spreads hatred of white people. In contrast, "Hasidism" teaches love of God and men, advances Torah study, extols piety and encourages the observance of Jewish moral and spiritual pre- cepts. "Hasidism," moreover, is an integral part of Jewish culture and history. - $1795 RODNICKv* MsiNERNEYS 772-4350 HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRED SORKOW — A True Friend — from Lil & Harry THE ALLAN/TOURO COLLEGE CHECK US OUT v Accredited baccalaureate degree program Studies o , Full range of Judaic ✓ v Excellent faculty v Small Classes Midwettern metropoiis v Located in central VI Close ties to vibrant Jewish community 15 Full Tuition Scholarships Available to Incoming Students For Information and College Bulletin Contact: The Ac a demic Dean THE ALLAN/TOURO COLLEGE 21550 West Twelve Mile Road • Southfield, Mich.48076 Telephone: (313) 357-2968 THE EDITORS OF ROAD & TRACK UNANIMOUSLY CHOSE SAAB AS THE BEST SPORTS SEDAN FOR THE '80s.
