New Holocaust
Series Airing
on German TV

BONN (JTA) — The first
of an eight-part German-
made television film based
on the experiences of a
Holocaust survivor was
broadcast on the national
TV network, ARD Tuesday.
It is titled "Ein Stueck
Himmel" (A Piece of Ha-
ven), adapted from the book
of the same name by the
Jewish author, Janina
David (Davidowitz), who is
the only member of her fam-
ily to survive the Holocaust.
The series is commanding
prime time, beginning at
8:15 p.m. just after the
popular evening newscast.
It is carried on the nation-
wide channel rather than
the regional outlets as was
the case with "Holocaust,"
the NBC-TV film broadcast
in W. Germany in 1980.
The story is autobiog-
raphical, following the life
of the author who experi-
enced the persecution of
Jews in Nazi-occupied Po-
land, beginning in the War-
saw Ghetto when she was
eight years old.

tate Dept.
Language School
to Offer Yiddish

WASHINGTON — Yid-
dish has been accepted as
legitimate language by the
Foreign Service Institute
which runs the language
school for State Department
workers.
Bernard Rotklein, a
Foreign Service worker who
learned Yiddish as a child,
had been persistently lobby-
ing for recognition of the
language despite the official
explanation that Yiddish
was not a primary language
of any nation.
Foreign service careerists
must have fluency in at
least one foreign language
and Rotklein, already
accredited in French and
Hebrew, argued that while
Yiddish is not the primary
language of Israel, it could
be useful for a diplomat
stationed there.

Orlando Jews
Expect Boom

ORLANDO, Fla. (JTA) —
An increase of nearly 300
percent in the number of
Jewish residents of Orlando
is projected for 1995, based
on findings of a study made
by a project of the Jewish
Federation of Greater Or-
lando.
The Federation's Com-
munity Alliance Project es-
timated that the Orlando
Jewish population would
reach 43,290 by 1995, with
more than one of every 20
Orlando residents then
being Jewish.
Currently, according to
the Orlando "Heritage,"
Jewish representation is
about one in every 50
residents. The study was
made by random sam-
pling telephone inter-
views with 559 Orlando
Jews.
The 1982 American
JewishYear Book estimates
Orlando's current Jewish
population at 15,000.
