Persecuted Jews
in New Novel
Lilliane Webb's "The
Marranos" (Pocket Books),
is a novel about the Jews
who maintained their faith
under the terrors of the
Spanish Inquisition. .
The Marranos are a group
of Jews who converted to
Christianity in order to
avoid being persecuted dur-
ing this dark period in his-
tory, but continued to prac-
tice their true faith in
secret.
The novel's central char-
acter is Isabel Valderocas,
who is brought up as a
Catholic and does not sus-
pect her family's Jewish
roots.
Upon learning that
their family is Jewish,
Isabel and her brother
decide to travel to Mad-
rid. There they hope to
gain enough influence in
the court to lessen the
plight of Spain's other
Marranos.
Lilliane Webb was born
and raised in Germany. Her
marriage to a Spanish Jew
sparked her interest in the
history of the Marranos.
