Book Details
Predicament
of Nuclear War

Jonathan Schell has writ-
-ten a comprehensive
analysis of the nuclear de-
bate in "The Fate of the
Earth" (Knopf).
The book, which first ap-
peared as a three-part series
in the New Yorker last year,
defines the shape and di-
mensions of the nuclear
predicament. The book
takes a decidedly anti-
nuclear stance and includes
a portrait by the author of a
full-scale nuclear holocaust.
Schell demonstrates how
nuclear weapons have un-
done the institution of war
as a means of settling dis-
putes between sovereign
nations and taken that in-
stitution to a much higher
plane.
The author is a staff
writer for the New Yorker.
His previous books include
"The Village of Ben Suc,"
"The Military Half" and
"The Time of Illusion."
