The statement by the Presidents Conference, signed by its chairman, Howard Squadron, and Yehuda Hellman, its execu- tive director, was one of many by American Jewish organizations and leaders marking the completion of Israel's final withdrawal from Sinai on Sunday. The Presidents Confer- ence hailed the move as "an heroic act of faith" and noted the immense sac- rifices of strategic security, natural resources and fi- nancial investment that it entailed. "We salute the leaders of Israel for their commitment to the peace process. We honor the cour- age of the people of Israel for placing at risk _their own lives and the lives of their children in the search for peace," the statement said. "We call on our gov- ernment, as a full partner in the peace process, to insure that Israel's sac- rifices for peace will not be in vain and to adopt a Middle East policy that rewards only those states willing to live in peace with Israel." In Washington on Sun- day, several thousand per- sons filled Lafayette Park across from the White House in a "rally for the conscience of America" to demand that the United States keep its commitment to the security of Iirael. Rabbi Avraham Weiss, co-chairman of the Coali- tion to Stop the American Abandonment of Israel, was the rally's organizer. The persons attending the rally, held a few hours after Israel had officially withdrawn from the Sinai, came for the most part from the New York, Baltimore and Washington areas. Last week, three U.S. Senators spoke strongly on behalf of U.S. support for Israel at a "National Israel Argues Against Reform JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Israeli government has presented its arguments to the Supreme Court against an appeal by the Movement for Progressive Judaism in Israel (Reform) to permit its rabbis to perform mar- riages, a function allowed only Orthodox rabbis since the state was founded_ According to the govern- ment, Reform rabbis do not meet the requirements to be recognized as rabbis accord- ing to religious law. The government con- tended further that the real goal of the_Reform group is to create a separate reli- gious authority in Israel which would perform mar- riages and divorces accord- ing to laws other than "To- rah laws." Leadership Conference of Solidarity With Israel" organized by the Confer- ence of Presidents, the National Jewish Com- munity Relations Advi- sory Council and the Jewish Community Council of Greater Wash- ington. The three Senators were Minority Leader Robert Byrd (D-W. Va.), Her Jackson (D-Wash.) a_ David Durenberger (R- Minn.). Before the meeting, a Presidents Conference group of 75 persons met with Vice President George Bush. Delegations also met with Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Charles Percy (R-I11.) and Majority Leader Howard Baker (R-Tenn.). Trojan "Son of C.
