EEC Pushes Venice Declaration

UNITED NATIONS
(JTA) — The European
Economic Community
(EEC) reiterated last week
its commitment to its Ven-
ice declaration of June 1980
which called for the associa-
tion of the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization in the
Middle East peace process
and self-determination for
the Palestinian people.
Ambassador Edmonde
Dever, of Belgium, speak-
ing on behalf of the EEC,
declared during the UN
General Assembly's debate
on the Palestinian question
that the governments of the

EEC member states believe
that all countries in the
Middle East have the right
to live in peace. But, she
added, at the same time
they also believe the Pales-
tinian people have the right
to self-determination.
She said the Palestinian
problem "is more than a
problem of refugees."
Ms. Dever expressed
the EEC's concern over
the current situation in
the area, particularly the
recent events on the West
Bank and Gaza Strip. She

An Oakland County pro-
bate judge refused Wednes-
day to issue a restraining
order at this time to prevent
the Jewish Association for
Retarded Citizens from
opening a group home in a
Pleasant Ridge neighbor-
hood.
Pleasant Ridge residents,
who are trying to block the
home, and the JARC were
ordered to file additional
documents with the court by
May 7.
Meanwhile,
JARC
Executive Director Joyce
Keller said the association's
attorney was notified Wed-

nesday morning during the
probate court hearing that
the city of Pleasant Ridge
has filed suit in Oakland
Circuit Court to block the
opening of the home.
Ms. Keller said Judge
Hilda Gage will hold a hear-
ing on that suit next Wed-
nesday.
