Kosher Butchers Dispute Editor, The Jewish News: In connection with the ongoing community crisis concerning the kosher meat markets, some statements were made in the name of the Metropolitan Kashruth Council in the Jewish News (issue of April 9) which were quoted out of context and should be qualified, in all fairness to the council. Two statements were taken from a three-page ar- ticle which the council is- sued to explain its stand on the matter. These two statements were (1) that during negotiations, the council urged the dissenting butchers to return to the Vaad; (2) that the Vaad should be in control of the kosher meat markets. While the two statements are true, they must be qual- ified. Five butchers met with me on Friday after- noon, April 2. They com- plained that they were dis- satisfied with the way the Vaad was treating them and that they wished to come under the supervision of the Metropolitan Kas- hruth Council. I told Ihem that the MKC would accept them but only on condition that they abide by the standards of the Shul- khan Arukh. When I spel- led out five conditions that would have to be ' met, they complained hat such demands were ever made of them by the Vaad. Thereupon, I urged them to return to the Vaad. In conclusion, I stated that the Vaad should con- trol the kosher butcher shops. Rabbi Jack Goldman Metropolitan Kashruth Council coverage in the Yamit area, journalists saw the pool ar- rangement as an attempt to muzzle the media and would have none of it. Members of the Israel Editors Commit- tee and the Israel Jour- nalists Association went to Yamit in defiance of army orders. Busloads of editors and reporters attempted to break through the army roadblocks around Yamit but were turned back by troops. Some journalists, adopting the tactics of the "Halt the With- drawal" movement, managed to infiltrate the town. Twelve Foreign Press Association jour- nalists representing media outlets in nine countries are reported to have • barricaded them- selves in an abandoned house in Yamit. Others were said to have donned skullcaps to pose as Or- thodox Jews who make up the majority of the Yamit resistors. In preparation for the final showdown, army bulldozers dug deep ditches around the buildings occu- pied by squatters. The in- tention was to remove the squatters and demolish the structures immediately thereafter, burying the de- bris in the ditches. MK Geula Cohen of the ultra-nationalist Tehiya faction, who was in Yamit, told a reporter that the gov- ernment would "not be burying the houses but burying itself."
