artillery pieces, 120mm
mortars, anti-aircraft guns,
jeep-mounted recoilless,
rifles and vehicles of var-
ious sorts used by the ter-
rorists."
Beirut radio stations re-
ported widespread air at-
tacks on refugee camps in
Beirut and the port of
Damour and elsewhere in
southern Lebanon, with
raids on radar installations
and Palestinian installa-
tions along the shore.
The PLO ordered its
men to withdraw from
many of its positions be-
cause of the weight of the
Israeli attack, Beirut
Radio said.
The terrorist radio said
that 60 F-15 and F-16
planes took part in the
raids, while the Falangist
Radio said that attack
helicopters also took part.
The Israel army denied Be-
irut reports that naval ves-
sels had taken part in the
attacks.
Chief of Staff Lt. General
Rafael Eitan told a press
conference in Tel Aviv after
the raids that two Syrian
MiG-23 planes were shot
down when they tried to
prevent the Israeli attacks.

He said the targets had
been carefully chosen at all
three points attacked, to
ensure that few if any civi-
lian buildings were in the
vicinity of the targets.
These included instal-
lations of the Fatah, the
Lebanese Arab Army
and Achemed Jibril's
terror organization.
Some light anti-aircraft
fire was encountered but
this did not put the attac-
kers off their targets, he
said.
Observers noted that the
government had told the
French and other inquireres
at the time of reported ten-
sion on the border that the
Cabinet "had not taken any
decision to invade Lebanon"

but this had left open the
possibility of other forms of
attack.
Begin had also warned
that no Jewish blood would
be spilled without retalia-
tion.

in the wake of the first Is-
raeli Sinai withdrawal. His
father, Samir Hanafi, was
watching the withdrawal
ceremonies on TV just as his
wife gave birth to their son.
The family's neighbors
did not approve of the idea.
The Hanafi's home was
burned and Samir found
himself ostracized socially
and ousted from his place of
work. He nevertheless re-
fused to revoke the child's
name, believing it to be an
omen of peace.
At the initiative of Israeli
diplomats, father and son
were invited to Israel — lit-
tle Begin as the personal
guest of the premier.
