The presentation was made in the presence of uni- versity leaders, Simons' friends and representatives of major movements and academic groups at lunch Wednesday at the Rackham Building. In an address typical of the honoree, sparkling with humor, Simons recalled his association with the late Rabbi Leo M. Franklin, his many years with Temple Beth El, being one of its past presidents, and his many other activities which in- volved the leadership of Dr. Franklin. He paid high praise for Rabbi Franklin as a man who contributed toward interfaith good will, and established sound foundations for spiritual and cultural activities in Detroit in both the civic and Jewish spheres. Simons' presentation of the $1,000 award to Wayne State University Press emphasizgd an- other of the honoree's roles, his deep interest in and labors for the WSU Press whose headquar- ters on Woodward Ave- nue have been named the Simons WSU Press Build- ing. Simons' humor delighted the 250 in attendance. They represented a cross section of the entire community, which, joined in acclaiming the honoree's notable con- tributions to the city, state, nation and world Jewry. President Thomas Bon- ner of Wayne State Univer- sity, presiding over the function, joined with Si- mons and the other partici- pants in the program in em- phasizing the link that has been established between Temple Beth El and Wayne State University as a result of the Leo M. Franklin proj- ects. Dr. Richard C. Hertz traced the history of the Leo Franklin-WSU joint activi- ties which began with the Franklin lectureships, the publishing of the texts of the lectures and subsequently the awards begun in 1972 and continue with the one accorded Leonard Simons. WSU Vice President Michael Luck read numerous citations hon- oring Simons, including a special message from Mayor Coleman Young. WSU Provost Calvin Ste- vens added the university's expression of appreciation for the link between Beth El and the university. The formal presentation of the Franklin Award of $1,000 was made by Mrs. Walter (Mary) Shapero, granddaughter of Dr. Franklin and chairman of the Leo M. Franklin Memo- rial Fund of Temple Beth El. Rabbi Dannel Schwartz of Beth El gave the invocation.
