THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Brodhead to Speak at Independence Day Detroit's celebration of Israel's 34th Independence Day, to be held May 2, will have as its keynote speaker Congressman William Brodhead (D-17th District). Following the 1 p.m. parade down Civic Center Drive, the opening cere- monies will begin in the Southfield Civic Center. Participating with Brodhead will be Rabbi Harold Loss of Temple Is- rael, who will offer the prayer for the state of Israel, and Cantor Larry Vieder of it Shalom Synagogue, r _ J will sing the national anthems. State Sen. Doug Ross and State Representative Joseph Forbes will present a joint resolution from the Michigan Legislature commemorating Israel's 34th anniversary. As part of the cere- mony the winners of this year's Temmy Skully Essay Contest will be an- nounced. The contest is open to' all high school and college youth plan- ning to study in Israel. The topic for the essay is the theme of the day: "Is- rael: the Land, the Coun- try, the People." A musical program featuring the Amranim Brothers will follow the opening ceremonies. Booths and exhibits will open at 11 a.m. in the South- field Civic Center. David synagogue. A special Israeli dinner will be prepared by Co- Chairmen Shula Fleischer and Goldie Weizman.
