(Continued from Page 30)
figured he would serve
100,000 gourmet meals to
more than 36,000 people.
The auto dealers' ex-
travaganzas lasted 44 days
and the Raleigh House
grossed more than $2 mil-
lion.
"Guests came from all
parts of the country for new
product presentations, fun
and relaxation. New carpet
had been laid in the Raleigh
House. Banquet halls were
re-papered and even the re-
strooms renovated.
gold-plated
"New
knives, forks and spoons
were purchased and food
was shipped from many
parts of the world.
"Crab legs arrived from
Alaska, cheese from France
and Italy, special crackers
from England, Beluga cav-
iar from Russia at $80 a
pound and hand-selected
Dover sole from Holland.
"Along with these de-
licacies there were pheas-
ants from North Dakota,
oysters from the best oyster
beds in the east, shrimp and
lobster from the Atlantic
seaboard and an untold
number of rounds of beef
from the best beef centers in
America.
"The scene shifts to May
1974. The rotund, undis-
puted king of the caterers
out-flaired himself at his
65th birthday celebration at
the Raleigh House.
"Some 600 guests were
invited to a 'repast from
the past,' with bagels,
cream cheese, lox,
knishes and stuffed cab-
bage a la Sammy's old
Blaine Restaurant in the
heart of Detroit's old
Jewish neighborhood on
Blaine and 12th Street.
"Shades of Sammy's Av-
alon Restaurant in Oak
Park - corned beef, turkey,
salami, pastrami and pick-
les - continued the weight
watchers' downfall.
"Sammy's restaurant of-
fered gourmet goodies like
clams casino, oysters Roc-
kefeller, quiche Lorraine
and caviar.
"Dinner Raleigh House
style featured filet mignon
with wine sauce, birthday
cake, cocktails and another
one for the road.
"Again, the highlight of
the evening was Sammy
himself, resplendent in
purple velvet robe with
ermine collar, crown and
cigar.
"If Sammy was at the
last supper, he'd ask for a
doggy bag,' quipped Bob
Talbert, master of cere-
monies for the catering
king's roast. 'An O.D. at the
Raleigh House is Sammy's
hors d'oeuvres,' Talbert
went on.
"The Rev. Nicholas Maes-
trini of Detroit's Maryglade
College lauded Sammy for
his great spirit and ability
to gather people of all ethnic
faiths and backgrounds
around him.
" 'What does a Catholic
priest have to do with roast-
ing a poor Jewish boy?' the
reverend queried at Sam-
my's birthday gala 'It's my

mission to save sinners.
Sammy thought of convert-
ing to Catholicism because
he wanted to be a cardinal.
He'd come td confession if he
could find a priest with a
Jewish accent.' • --
"Nate Fink, then
chairman of the board of
Great Scott Market, said
of Sammy, 'The lovable
fat man once had no pots
to cook in. Now he has the
biggest pot in town.
" 'Sammy had humble be-
ginnings at the Blaine Res-
taurant and had visions of
grandeur of Sir Walter
Raleigh. Raleigh covered a
puddle with his cape.
Sammy covers the popula-
tion with knishes and
mushroom barley soup.' "
