THE
MYSTERY
MUNCHER writes: "It was
February 1972.
"Food and drink were
plentiful and visitors ob-
tained each from several
places throughout the huge
hall.
"All was consumed in epic
proportions that would have
done justice to Cecil B. De
Mille.
"But the biggest star was
Raleigh House vice
president and general man-
ager Sammy Lieberman. He
appeared in a bright red
cape with silver trim topped
off by a foppish black hat
with white plume.
"That's how a lot of people
remember Sammy, who
died April 6, 1981.
"On that February
night, guests were as var-
ied as the modes of dress.
From politicians to
entertainers to priests
they assembled in busi-
ness suits, hostess gowns,
sport outfits and queenly
garb.
"But there could be only
one king. And he was
Sammy Lieberman. While
he dressed like Sir Walter
Raleigh, the manner and
atmosphere were strictly
Henry VIII.
"Guests were gathered to
celebrate the groundbreak-
ing of the Raleigh House's
$2 million expansion pro-
gram. When completed,
seating capacity for the
sprawling Tudor building
would reach 3,200.
"Additions included a
new dining room, banquet
room, English-style pub and
coffee house.
"In August 1972, Sam-
my's Raleigh House
reached its peak. It
played host to 8,000
Chevrolet dealers and
their wives. While the
Chevy group held forth in
Southfield, 9,000
Chrysler officials and
their spouses frolicked in
Reno, Nev.
"Both major events were
catered by Sammy. The
major domo of the entire op-
eration jetted back and
forth to supervise the
mammoth undertaking.
"Sammy was unruffled as
he noted this was the
biggest thing he ever did.
By the time he finished, he
