WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Philip Klutznick, president
emeritus of the World
Jewish Congress, declared
that American Jews were
losing "credibility" and
"fooling ourselves" in be-
lieving they were "fooling
others" in maintaining that
Jews in the U.S. and
elsewhere were united be-
hind every act of the Israeli
government.
"We are doing great dam-
age to Israel by our acts that
give rise to serious ques-
tions of credibility of our
own American Jewish in-
stitutions, our own Jewish
American leaders who are
perceived in too many
places as acting as rubber
stamps," he told some 200
people Sunday at a meeting
sponsored by The New
Jewish Agenda at Temple
Sinai here.
Klutznick, who was Sec-
retary of Commerc in the
Carter Administration, de-
voted much of his prepared
remarks to defending his
right to criticize Israel.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Former Soviet Jewish pris-
oner of conscience Ida Nudel
has been informed by Soviet
authorities that she will not
be given permission to emi-
grate, according to informa-
tion received by the Greater
New York Conference on
Soviet Jewry.
Ms. Nudel was called into
the local police office in
Moscow where two repre-
sentatives of the Internal
Affairs Ministry told her
that they were angered by
the press conference she
held following her return to
Moscow last month from
four years of exile in
Siberia, and by the wide
coverage it was given in the
West.
Although Ms. Nudel ex-
plained that she only wants
to emigrate to Israel, the of-
ficials responded that "267
million people have made
lives for themselves in the
Soviet Union," and they ad-
vised her to do the same, the
conference reported.
