"We must bear witness to
the sanctity of those who
died, and we must bear wit-
ness to life."
Dr. John Mames, a past
president of Shaarit Hap-
laytah and chairman of its
oral history project, pre-
sented the organization's
Righteous Gentile Award in
absentia to Raoul Wallen-
berg.
Wallenberg, a Univer-
sity of Michigan gradu-
ate, is credited with sav-
ing from 20,000 to 50,000
Hungarian Jews
from the Nazis during
1944 by issuing Swedish
documents and establish-
ing Swedish safe-houses
for them. Arrested by the
Russians in 1945, Wal-
lenberg disappeared in
Soviet prison and a
worldwide movement is
seeking his release.

Swedish Royal Consul
Marvin Anderson accepted
the award on Wallenberg's
behalf and announced that
it would be sent to the Wal-
lenberg family in Sweden.
In his memorial address,
Rabbi Rosenzveig, director
of the Holocaust Memorial
Center under construction
in West Bloomfield, chas-
tised the Catholic Church
for its silence during the
Holocaust.
Quoting from a recent
book by a Newark, N.J
priest, Rabbi Rosenzveig
said the Vatican had de-
tailed reports as early as
October 1941 about the
Nazis' extermination of the
Jews.
He added that the
quisling governments in
Slovakia and Yugoslavia,
which participated in the
Holocaust, were headed
by loyal Catholics who
could have been influ-
enced by the Pope to stop
the slaughter of Jews.
"Instead, the Pope chose
to ignore the urgent, plead-
ing appeals and chose to
remain silent," Rabbi
Rosenzveig said.
"We wonder at the differ-
ent fate of our people if the
Pope had the nobility and
humanity of a Raoul Wal-
lenberg." Rabbi Rosenzveig
concluded his address by
asking the Vatican to pub-
licly confess its sins of the
Holocaust.
Other participants in the
program included: Leon
Halpern, Mrs. Sonia
-Popowski, Cantor Louis
Klein of Cong. Bnai Moshe
and Cantor Chaim Najman
of Shaarey. Zedek, accom-
panist Carole Lasser, Ma-
rian Shiffman, Judge Avern
Cohn, Henry Dorfman,
Gustav Berenholz, Jack
Waksberg, Sr. Carol Ritt-
ner, Arthur Weiss, Robert
Arkand, Bernard Kent,
Shari Ferber and Martin
Water.
A Holocaust exhibit
was placed in the lobby of
Shaarey Zedek, and in-
cluded were proclama-
tions from the state of

Kahane Visit
Is Protested

Leaflets were distributed
at Shaarey Zedek on Sun-
day, as well as at Cong. Beth
Achim on Saturday, pro-
testing the scheduled ad-
dress Tuesday at a
Holocaust memorial pro-
gram at Beth Achim by
Rabbi Meir Kahane.
Kahane, founder of the
Jewish Defense League in
the U.S. and the Kach
movement in Israel, was to
have spoken on "Lessons of
the Holocaust for Today's
Jews."

The leafleth linked Rabbi
Kahane and his movements
with fascism and stated, "To
have Meir Kahane speak at
a memorial to the victims of
the Nazis' racism and fas-
cism is an abomination to
the sacred memory of the
Six Million."
The leaflets asked per-
sons who agreed with their
position to contact Beth
Achim, and was signed
"Jews Against Racism and
Facism."
One of the distributors
of the leaflets told The
Jewish News, "Kahalla
and the JDL are chanW
ing the oppressor from
the Nazi to the Jew, and
the oppressed from the
Jew to the Arab."
Rabbi Kahane's appear-
ance Tuesday was canceled
after the rabbi was called
back to Israel to talk with
members of his movement
who had threatened suicide
if Israeli troops tried to
evacuate them from a
bunker in Yamit, part of the
Sinai being returned to
Egypt on Sunday as a result
of the 1979 Israeli-Egyptian
peace agreement.
He has been in the U.S.
since late March, fleeing
from an Israeli warrant for
his arrest. The warrant ac-
cuses Kahane of inciting
Arabs in Judea and
Samaria, where he has
called for the eviction of all
Arabs.

Warsaw Ghetto
Anniversary Due

WARSAW (JTA) — The
Polish government plans to
commemorate the 40th an-
niversary of the Warsaw
Ghetto uprising next year
with impressive ceremonies
on the site of the former
ghetto.
Polish officials said the
commemoration will be one
of the most important cere-
monies held in Poland in re-,
cent years and Jewish sur- \
vivors from all over the
world will be invited. -
The Association of Polish
Jewish War Veterans as
well as the various associa-
tions of ghetto survivors
will be asked to participate
in drawing up the plans for
the ceremonies which will
last several days.
Several of the former
ghetto buildings still stand
and Polish officials are tak-
ing necessary measures to
preserve them for historical
purposes.
