Crucial Israeli-Egyptian Date

Israeli Troops, Police
Evaculate the Sinai

The Sinai town. of Yamit is shown before it was
leveled this week by Israeli soldiers in preparation for
Sunday's final Israeli withdrawal from Sinai and re-
turn of the region to Egypt.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The Israeli army started its opera-
tion to remove the last demonstrators from the Yamit area
and level the town itself shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday,
some hours after the Israeli Cabinet gave the final go-
ahead for the withdrawal from Sinai. At the time, Rabbi
Meir Kahane was still in a concrete bomb shelter trying to
persuade his followers not to commit mass suicide in pro-
test of Israel's withdrawal from the Sinai.
Kahane had flown from Detroit on Tuesday, after
being asked by Israeli officials to return to speak to the
zealots barricaded in the bunker. He had left Israel in
March after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Founder of
the Jewish Defense , League in the U.S., and the ultra-
national Kach movement in_Israel, Kahane had beein
charged with inciting the Arab population of Judea and
Samaria.
Opposition to the evacuation on Wednesday was re-
ported to be "reasonable," though in the first town quarter
into which the troops moved squatters on rooftops threw
bottles at the soldiers and burned tires.
Each squad of soldiers was accompanied by an
officer of at least lieutenant colonel rank; with men
and women policemen joining the soldiers. Even more
senior officers moved about the evacuating groups.
The officers knocked on the doors of the houses and,
whenever residents answered, the residents were asked to

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Israeli Cabinet decided unanimously Wednesday that the Sinai with-
drawal will take place on schedule on Sunday. Premier Menahem Begin reported to the ministers that
Egyptian infringements had been rectified and that satisfactory pledges had been received from Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak. A "very significant" letter had also come from U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
The Cabinet issued a last-minute call to the anti-withdrawal movement in Yamit to leave peaceably
and not clash with the army and police. The "higher interests of the state" demanded this, the Cabinet
statement said.
In an eight-point official statement, the Cabinet:
• Noted that Egyptian infringements of the Sinai demilitarization and limitation-of-forces provisions
had been corrected and Mubarak in a letter to Begin last Friday had pledged they would not recur.
• Noted that Egypt had taken "steps" to prevent penetration of terrorists or weapons across
the Sinai-Gaza border and pledged to prevent this in the future.
• Noted receipt of a second letter from Mubarak on Tuesday in which he referred to and re-endorsed
the letter that accompanied the March 1979 peace treaty, in which the two countries pledged to negotiate
over Palestinian autonomy "in good faith."
That letter also declared, "The objective of the negotiations is to agree, prior to the elections, on the
modalities for establishing the elected self-government authority (administrative council), define its
powers and responsibilities, and agree upon other related issues."
Mubarak in his Tuesday letter reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to continue these negotiations, with
U.S. participation as full partner, "until we reach agreement."
• "In light of these facts" the withdrawal of Israeli soldiers and civilians will be completed by Sunday.
• Reagan's letter, the Cabinet statement said, was "of great significance to future security of
the Jewish people and the state of Israel."
The Cabinet expressed "deep apprecia-
tion" to Reagan.
• There was also an expression of thanks to
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Walter Stoessel
for his mediation efforts in recent days.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Reagan declared Tuesday
that the United States has a "firm commitment to Israel's security"
and that the Holocaust reminds Americans that Israel is "a country
that rightfully never takes its security or survival for granted."

In a White House ceremony marking Yom HaShoah, Holocaust
Remebrance Day, Reagan noted that Israel will complete its return of
the Sinai to Egypt on Sunday. "We fervently pray that the return of
the Sinai will be accepted for what it is — a magnificent act of faith by
