Floats, Parade Planned for May 2 Event

Preparations continue for
Detroit's celebration of Is-
rael's 34th Independence
Day, to be held May 2 in
Southfield. The day's events
will begin with a parade of
floats, banners, flags and
marcheis representing
many organizations, youth
groups and congregations.
The parade will commence
at the Bendix Corp. at 1-p.m.
and culminate at the South-
field Civic Center.
The youth group of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, assisted by
the PTO and sisterhood, is
building a float entitled
"Gates of Righteousness

in honor of Israel's 34th
birthday and the congrega-
tion's 120th birthday.

said a float design contest
was held for religious school
students and Mark Wein-
traub submitted the win-
nign design.
Bnai Brith Youth
Organization will build a
float using the theme of
the day: "Israel, the
Land, the Country, the
People." Sheri Benkoff
and Gary Naftaly, co-
ordinators for BBYO par-
ticipation in the parade,
announced that each
chapter will march with a
banner and several
flower parties are
scheduled for float build-
ing. They plan to have 100
youth marching.
Booths and exhibits open
at the Southfield Civic Cen-
ter 11 a.m. May 2; the
parade is at 1 p.m. and
entertainment by the Am-
ranim Brothers is at 2 p.m.
Booths will be open all af-
ternoon.

In honor of Israel Inde-
pendence Day, Henry
Friedman, local artist, will
exhibit his collection of
sculptures at the Jewish
Home for Aged for a two-
week exhibit beginning
Monday.
He will speak on April 25
at 3 p.m. at Borman Hall
about his art objects. The

hibit will run through April
