Family Linked to First Jew Who Settled in Michigan An item in the winter issue of LBI News, pub- lished by the Leo Baeck In- stitute, says that the Adams family of Ypsilanti has been linked through material in the Baeck archives to Michigan's first Jewish resident, Ezekiel Solomon. Solomon emigrated from Berlin to Canada. In 1761, he was at Fort Mackinac, then still part of British Canada. Captured by the Indians in the Mackinac Massacre of 1763, Ezekiel Solomon was subsequently ransomed by the British and returned to Mackinac and to his profession of fur trader. He became one of the founders of the Mackinac Company, a combine of 30 fur traders, and served as a member of the first Michi- gan Board of Trade. - Despite the fact that he was married to a non-Jew, Ezekiel Solomon was a member and officer of the Montreal Cong. Shearith Israel. He lived until 1808. Today, at Fort Mackinac, a state historical marker stands in his honor. $3.50 $3.50 $2.95 $2.95 $2.95 $3.514 WESTLAND 728 - 1303 NOVI 349 - 2885 (A & P Center) Mon. thru Thurs. and Sat. 7 a.m.-9 p.m . Ruth Kobrin, JPC president, said applications for the first two weeks total 5,737, compared with 5,693 during the full program last year. She said that 5,737 applications represented more than 15,000 Jews. ••••••• •• • 4,4°... 1 7 0MERSIT °••••••••• 4 :""`" DINER THEATRE • • detroit's Original dinner theatre • • •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• • • How TIN Other Half Loves • • • • • • •••••••• •••• •• • • • Alfredo Jimmy Launce PROductions, Inc. • presents • Comedy-Farce by Alan Ayckbourn NOW APPEARING PAM MARTIN - and PIZAll COMPLETE. Asked by the president of Tusiad to comment on rela- tions with Israel, the Tur- kish Foreign Minister said that a break in relations was not being envisaged and gave the following ex- planation: "There are certain sensi- tive balances in our foreign policy. We have to assess our external relations as a whole. Arab countries are understanding about the difficulties we would have in cutting off relations with Israel entirely." Besides Egypt, Turkey was the only Islamic coun- fry which did not vote in favor of the recent UN General Assembly resolu- tion condemning Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights and calling for Is- rael's total isolation from the international commu- nity. LAFAYETTE I NEW YORK (JTA) — Foreign Minister Ilter Turkmen of Turkey has told Turkish businessmen that his country is seeking to play the role of a bridge be- tween the West and the Is- lamic countries that the severance of diplomatic re- lations with Israel is not being considered. _ Turkmen's remarks, monitored by sources of the World Jewish Congress from a broadcast of the Au- stralia Agency in Istanbul earlier last week, came at a meeting with the Turkish Businessmen's Society, (Tusiad) at which he dis- closed the intention of his government to apply for full membership in the Euro- pean Economic Community "when the political atmos- phere is right." Turkey, he added, did not have to turn its back on the West while strengthening relations in the Middle East. Elaborating on this theme, Turkmen said that in formulating foreign policy, Turkey would take care to "keep all options open" and to distinguish clearly be- tween short-term and long-term perspectives.
