THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Technical Training Important Facet of ZOA Schools' Program GREEKTOWN COMES TO SOUTHFIELD! DIMITRI'S By BEN G. FRANK KFAR SILVER, Israel — Young Israelis are being trained at schools such as the . Sylvia and Alexander Hassan Technical High School established by the Zionist Organization of America on the beautiful 520-acre Kfar Silver cam- pus, just outside of Ashke- lon. The scene at the Hassan Technical High School has been described as a technological stream." ( ) \--_.-Flowing into classes in the early morning hours are students from all over Is- -) rael, including a number from surrounding moshavim and in the city of Ashkelon. Those who come from afar live in dormitories on the Kfar Silver campus. Many of the students in the high school are sons and daugh- ters of new immigrants. Now they are an integrated part of the student body which every day studies and learns, experiments and theorizes and fixes and re- pairs — all in a modern building which is replete with classrooms, laboratories and work- shops. The school is dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Alexan- der Hassan of Washing- ton, D.C. Auto mechanics, techni- cians and even amateur "grease monkeys," those who just like to putter, find the school a dream come true. There is a fully-equipped auto mechanics laboratory that includes both a work- ing model of a car as well as many cross sections of var- ious auto systems. The workshops also contain much diagnostic machin- ery. Practical work is obvi- ously part of the program. In fact, the 11th and 12th grades are so proficient that they are often given cars of their very own instructors to fix. Sixty percent of the curriculum at the Hassan Technical High School is theoretical. Math, physics, as well as theoretical studies in auto mechanics such as motors, thermodynamics and structural strength are taught. One of the highlights of the course is the repair of nks. - Israel has just pro- , _aced the new Merkava tank, and the students in the auto mechanic section maintain a close relation- ship with the Ordnance Corps of the Israel Defense Forces. After graduation, students of the Hassan School enter the armed forces of Israel as techni- cians for all types of army vehicles. While everyone in Israel serves in various branches - of the military, it is the stu- dent's life after discharge that the instructors and supervisors at the Hassan School feel they are aiding. , , Friday, April 16, 1982 31 OF SOUTHFIELD SOUTHFIELD AT 10 MILE 569-0882 SERVING COMPLETE GREEK CUISINE . . . "We are building an Is- rael at peace," one teacher said, "and that means that in the soon-to-be 21st Cen- tury, we will need techni- cians who can repair cars, boats, tractors and trains." In effect, the Sylvia and Alexander Hassan Technical High School is geared for peace. After all, it is part of the larger Kfar Silver campus which has a student body of over 700, and a faculty of 140. Other schools on campus include the high school of science and ag- riculture, an aviation high school, a nurses training program, the Mollie Goodman Aca- demic High School and a junior high. Another important proj- ect on the campusis the de- _ partment of Judaic studies in honor of Rabbi Alfred Gottschalk, president of the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Reli- gion. There is the Jeanne and Irwin Levy Department of Social Studies and the Milton and Beatrice Shap- iro Department of Foreign Languages. Founded in 1954 by the ZOA and named after one of America's foremost Zionist leaders, Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, Kfar Silver can be proud of its thousands of alumni who today are technicians, pilots, mechanics, engineers, farmers and agronomists.
