COMMACK, N.Y. (JTA)
— Police in Suffolk County,
which is believed to have
the nation's highest arrest
rate of anti-Semitic van-
dals, say they are being
hampered by Jews who re-
fuse to press charges, it was
reported by the Jewish
World of Long Island.
"We keep running into
Jews who refuse to sign
complaints because they
`don't want to get in-
volved,' " said Suffolk
County Police Detective

Howard Mandell. "They
don't want to have to spend
a few hours in court to see
justice done."
Mandell, who heads the
county police task force on
anti-Semitism, said that in
one recent incident, four
girls walking to the Dix
Hills Jewish Center were

harassed by a gang of boys,
one of whom yelled "Heil
Hitler" and pointed a rifle at
them. "But we could not
press chargeg because the
parents refused to let the
girls file a complaint,"
Mandell said.
As a result of prompt
police response to com-

burg said the neo-Nazis in
the city have been or-
ganized under a new name.
According to the minis-
ter, the newly organized
"Hamburg List to Stop For-
eigners" is a coalition of
several neo-Nazi groups, in-
cluding one led by Michael
Kuehnen, who has been
sentenced to four years in
prison for rightwing vio-
lence.
At least two members of
the committee are, accord-
ing to Pawelczyk, well
known activists in
Kuehnen's organization,
which has been involved in
many violent incidents and
in continuous anti-Semitic
propaganda. The Hamburg
List is apparently under
close surveillance by the
Internal Security Service.
Meanwhile, scores of pub-
lic organizations have
called for a ban on the new
group which intends to par-
ticipate in the upcoming
Parliament elections in
Hamburg.

One of the recent jokes in
comedian Mort Sahl's
routine discusses U.S. pol-
icy toward Israel:
"Begin said to me that the
Reagan Administration's
policy toward Israel is that
every time the Jews are
drowning 20 feet from
shore, Reagan throws them
a 15-foot rope, and then
Alexander Haig says, 'The
President has met them
more than half way.' "

plaints lodged with them,
Mandell said, Suffolk,
was the only county in
the New York metropoli-
tan area to report a 30
percent decline in anti-
Semitic incidents be-
tween 1980 and 1981.
During the same period in
adjoining Nassau County —
where he said local judges
were "benevolent" — anti-
Semitic incidents increased
by 50 percent.
