IT WAS "OSCARS"
NIGHT in Hollywood . .
with all the glamor that the
film industry annually
musters for this gala occa-
sion.
Here in Southfield, the
pre-opening of its newest
restaurant-lounge . . . Di-
mitri's of Southfield . . . also
brought out the sear-
chlights in a lavish ex-
travaganza that reminded
many of those yesteryear
galas.
If you can picture almost
2,000 people coming and
going from 4 p.m. on . . . so
very many having such a
good time they didn't leave
until the wee hours . . . and
almost everything from the
menu on tables set all over
the restaurant . . . you
might get a slight idea of the
grand pre-opening of Dimit-
ri's of Southfield.
You couldn't imagine
the amounts of food that
was consumed ... 100
pounds of feta cheese, 200
pounds of octopus, 20
whole lambs, 550 orders
of Spanakotyropita
(spinach and cheese pie),
550 orders of mousaka,
1,500 hot stuffed grape
leaves, 1,000 stuffed
squash, 1,500 orders of
tyropitakia (feta cheese
in filo dough), 1,000 meat
balls, 500 pieces of dol-
mathes (cold stuffed
grape leaves), 30 pounds
of chicken livers for
rumaki.
Also, five gallons of
taramosalata (red caviar
whipped in olive oil and le-
mon), five gallons of tzad-
ziki (yogurt with grated
cucumbers), 50 pounds of
olives, 1,000 pieces of bak-
lava, 500 pieces of galak-
tobouriko, 800 orders of pas-
titsio . . . and on and on .. .
with so many more Greek
delicacies . . . Greek salad,
scordalia, etc., etc., etc. . . .
plus 13 cases of fresh fruit
. . . pears, apples and grapes
. . . and 50 honeydew me-
lons.
Waitresses were in differ-
ent colored uniforms .. .
Smiling lassies like Helene
Weinberger, daughter of
Shoshana and Jack Wein-
berger, so pretty in blue .. .
Polite waiters with bow ties
. . . Young courteous door-
men . . . attentive personnel
throughout.
And, of course, Day Man-
ager Vicky Patera, whose
beautiful smile, warm per-
sonality and graciousness
are assets known by so
many who would find it very
hard to believe that the sun
and moon don't rise and set
on her.
When you realize that on
the same night were the Os-
cars, the NCAA basket-
ball championship and two
other noteworthy com-
munal events, the amount
of people who attended Di-
mitri's of Southfield's pre-
opening is staggering .. .
Can't help but wonder what
would have happened if
nothing else had been going
on that night!
HAVE YOU BEEN lis-
tening to the great tunes
and artists of yesteryears
. . . morning, noon and night
. . . being played every day
over the new CKJY-FM 94?
. . . If you want to hear the
song you miss or the record-
ing star of memory, keep
listening . . . A lot of young
folks are also keeping their
ears tuned to the music .. .
and asking where it's been
all their life.
NOW IT WAS Tony
Bennett . . . who came tc_
Excalibur on Northwestern
. . . following Frank Sinat-
ra's recent visit . . . Tony
had lamb chops . . . Frank
had ribs.
RON CODEN Show is at
J. Ross Browne Whaling
Station on Telegraph in
Bloomfield Hills through
May 1.
IN 1971, PAM MARTIN
was runner-up in the Miss
Kentucky Contest . . . and a
music major at Western
Kentucky . . . Today, she is
as pretty as ever . . . and
possesses a voice that has
matured with very pleasing
results . . . appearing at
Darlin' Lilly's on Orchard
Lake Rd. through May with
her new backup group
called Pizzazz.
Pam's presentation of
melodies is enhanced by
delightfully-easy inflec-
tions one can readily see
comes only from a well-
cultured voice . . . Her excel-
lent poise, very lovely smile
and most-pleasing person-
ality are choice assets as
Pam sings songs like .. .
"Bette Davis Eyes," "Nine
To Five," "Let's Get Physi-
cal," "New York, New
York," "The Way We Were,"
"Set Me Free" . . . Barbra
Streisand, Diana Ross and
Four Tops medleys, etc. . . .
with as much power or soft-
ness as is needed in the in-
timacy of a room such as
Darlin's Lilly's, which
seems so conducive to her
fine vocalizing.
Pam with Pizzazz
entertain for listening
and dancing enjoyment
... Latin, pops, show
tunes, top 405, standards
... a little country like
"The Sweetest Thing I've
Ever Known Is Loving
You" and the great beat
of "On The Radio."
Ever since that day when
Sam Loccrichio needed a
songstress for the Lorio's
group appearing in 1971 at
Pine Knob and reached in
Kentucky for the jus
graduated Pam Martin .. .
through the years . . . with
Mel Ball ... Familiar Faces
. . . she has gotten consis-
tently better.
The first time I saw her
was years back with Famil-
iar Faces at Francesco's on
Michigan in Dearborn .. .
So many people thought
there was little room for im-
provement . . . There's not
much doubt that Pam Mar-
tin now is better than she
was then.
SIGHT AND SOUND,
three guys and a gal, are at
Stephenson Club, N.
Chrysler Drive, through
April 24.
