THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Levin Fears Energy Policy Danny Raskin's - K- i ;Th LISTENING POST BACK IN 1953, Joe Cor- nell had his first dance con- test . . . About 100 youngsters, parents and friends showed up at Holi- day Manor on Wyoming to see Sandy Rusch and Cy Adler win Joe's first compe- tition. The next year, Joe opened his dance studio on Wyom- ing . . . and it was to be- come the start of even big- ger things . . . Today, he spends about eight months out of the year in Los Angeles, Calif., where Joe has become a "social star" at country club events for the prominent and regular day-by-day citizens. At a recent dance contest he held for parents, Joe awarded film celeb Jack Lemmon a trophy and kid- ded, "I think you're a ringer." . . . (Jack Lemmon has done some hoofing in his day.) But back to the yearly dance contests Joe has had here in the local area . . . The latest one, his 29th, was an annual spring ball and dance competition that cer- tainly proved he and wife Kathy and their fine staff will need much more room next year . . . Al- most 1,000 youngsters, relatives and friends packed Michigan Inn to see guys 'n gals from 10 dance class sessions vie for terpsi honors. First place went to Robert Fink and Jennifer Golding . . . Robert also won a trophy as the year's top Joe Cornell student . . . Other winners were . . . Steve Jasgur and Stacy Weissberg, second . . . Jef- frey Share and Laura Greenbaum, third . . . Steve Nakisher and Michelle Simon, fourth . . . Gary Brode and Renee Lederman, fifth . . . and since only one vote sepa- rated it from fifth, a sixth place was awarded . . . to Sam Sky and Francine Hermelin. Music was very much un- like that first year of just records on Wyoming . . . as Jerry Ross Five Plus Two C \ furnished the fox trots, cha „- chas, waltzes and rock- and-roll melodies . . . The almost 1,000 cheered the young lads and lassies on . . . most of whom came out almost half scared to death . . . but all really winners for their wonderful efforts and spirit . . . Even parents like Diane Gussin, contes- tant Darren Gussin's mom, rocked with rhythm on the sidelines. Joe at the mike while kids were dancing continuously asked the throng, "What number do you like?" . . . and screams of all the num- bers made a big mumo- jumbo of screeching glee. It was Joe's biggest yet . and he'll have even bigger. HARRY B. KEIDAN Lodge, Bnai Brith, will host a dinner-theater party, May 18, at Somerset Dinner Theater in Troy . . . with Jimmy Launce Production's comedy of "How The Other Half Loves" and buffet dinner . . . For reserva- tions, call Morry Direnfeld, 557-3300. CRESCENT SHRINE Club again took about 1,450 youngsters to the Shrine Circus this year . . . and thanks to very hard- working chairman Sonny Goldstein . . . everything went off smooth . . . I had breakfast before going to work; there with the volun- teers because last year they ran out of things . . . So who would know that this year's Crescent president, Max Kushner, would over- buy on bagels, lox and cream cheese to feed even those Shriners who asked what lox was and took three sandwiches. Ed Hoffman couldn't celebrate his 71st birthday any better than helping with the unfortunate kids . . . Oscar Kahan, in charge of their sector, mar- veled as the 17 blind youngsters from Einstein School who enjoyed the cir- cus through earphones, laughter and smell . . . Sylvia Brown, director of Children's Leukemia Foun- dation, does such a magnifi- cent job with her lads 'n las- sies . . . Such a pleasure to know so fine a woman as Sylvia and her husband Harry. JOE AND MALKA Kantor, both Israeli born, U.S. residents for the past 17 years, recently sold their home in Wabeek and moved to Orlando, Fla. with chil- dren Avi, Ori and Galit . . . Joe is a builder and Malka is state manager for A & B Merchandising, Inc., pub- lishers of "The Digest," pro- fit builder for retail and pro- fessional people. BERNIE BERMAN, liv- ing in San Diego with wife Ruth, is all sailor now . . . Guests Ruth and Albert Krochmal were the latest Detroit friends visiting to go sailing on Bernie's new boat.
