The couple obtained sto- len food coupons and false identity papers and pro- vided a hiding place in their attic until 1944 when Wer- ''art van Deventer was ar- ested and sent to a concen- tration camp. He was re- leased later that year. David Ariel, Israel's Con- sul General for Ontario and Western Canada, came to Victoria to give the couple the Yad Vashem Righteous Gentile Medal which is awarded to people who risked their lives to save Jews. The van Deventers came to Canada with their two children after the war and opened a bicycle shop in Victoria. The $34,000 grant came from the foundation through the federation's Council on Jewish Life. It was made to the Reform synagogue to enable it to provide a total outreach program, including the idea of providing 'translators for community events, Klug- man said. Planned outreach proj- ects include prgentation of a cultural art series; estab- lishment of a deaf drama group; more adult education classes; transportation for elderly deaf Jews to synagogue activities; and creation of a speakers bureau to work with organ- izations of normal hearing Jews to sensitize them to the problems of hearing im- paired Jews.
