iThe Best of Everything

THERE'S A BIG new
dining concept at Topinka's
Country House on W. Seven
Mile Rd. and Telegraph .. .
with the emphasis on BIG
. . . plus an emergence of the
time-honored spot ..
primarily now as a seafood,
steak. and prime rib house.
Big isn't the word for the
portions you get these days
at Topinka's . . . Gigantic
would seem more appropri-
ate . . . Like the Seafood
Feast for $16.95 . . . with
lobster tail, crab legs,
shrimp, frog legs and lake
perch . .. or the 32 oz. (that's
right) Porterhouse steak,
$15.95 . . . or the 32 oz (no
mistake) prime rib, $13.95
. . . or the over 20 oz. New
York Sirloin, $13.95 ("pe-
tite" size of 14 oz. is $11.95).
Topinka's has gone big in
a big way . . . and their or-
ders of "doggie" bags have
undoubtedly tripled . . . You
look at all this food . . . and
probably say to yourself,
"Who can eat so much?" .. .
Let me tell you from a re-
cent experience there, it's
not as hard as you think be-
cause of such luscious taste
. . . and delightful tender-
ness.
Son Scott was in town
from University of Texas,
where Texans boast,
"When we say big, friend,
we mean big!" ... How-
ever, he admitted never
seeing such huge por-
tions as Topinka's is now
serving.
I had the lavish Seafood
Feast . . . and after polite,
gracious waitress Jamie
Henson put on the plain
white bib . . . without the
junky-looking lobster . . . I
went to work with zest .. .
and finished with utter
satisfactipn . . . Scott or-
dered the same thing .. .
Frieda and Pam polished off
juicy, tender, 32 oz. prime
ribs they mistakenly
thought would be too big for
them.
I've had seafood platters
before . . . but nothing to
compare with the one at To-
pinka's . . . It's got to rank as
one of the best dishes in
town . . . and the way sea-
food and fish costs have
been soaring, that price
can't be ignored.
Everything in our Sea-
food Feast was succulent
and tender . . . so deliciously
out-of-this-world that my
tastebuds were probably
jumping around with joy.
Same with Scott . . . It
was a dining delight he took
back to Texas with nothing
but raves.
Meanwhile, Frieda and
Pam were devouring
their 32-ounce prime ribs
... I've tasted prime rib
before at Topinka's and
often contended that few
places make it as good as
they do ... Now with the
gargantuan two-
pounders ... and tasting
just as good, if not better
. .. lovers of prime rib
should flock in droves to
Topinka's.
Topinka's has the same
great, colorful decor that
makes it one of the most

beautiful restaurants any-
where . . . with its red
leather booths, red and
black leather padded chairs,
Tudor settings with huge
iron chandeliers, brown
wood walls, fireplace set in a
large bricked wall, stained
glass designs, etc.
But there is a change in
the 400 seat restaurant .. .
and it's big . . . The same
lovely Topinka's Country
House of yesterdays re-
mains the same . . . but with
a brand new dining concept
that can't be found any-
where else . . . People who
like to eat will now find To-
pinka's a bonanza of epicu-
rean value.
The cloth table coverings
and cloth napkins are still a
trademark . . . as is taking
away glasses of water
whether they've been drunk
or not and replaced with
fresh glasses of water .. .
and that great little touch
you don't find at too many
places nowadays . . . the
brining of wide aluminum
finger bowls w;th lemon
and cloth napkin regardless
of what you eat . . . with fin-
gers or without.
The new Topinka's
menu has about 20 sea-
food and fresh fish items
... four combinations:
petite filet and lobster
tail, $18.95; scallops and
shrimp, $13.95; king crab
legs and petite filet,
$14.95; steak and shrimp,
$13.95 ... A hot hors*
d'oeuvres tray includes
shrimp, Ramaki, meat-
balls, scallops, frog legs
and cocktail franks for
$6.95 per person.
All the vegetables are
fresh . . . and Topinka's spe-
cial stuffed baked potato is
easily among the best .. .
The house salad that comes
with all dinners is a Tdpin-
ka's favorite . . . and big, too
. . . with special cue-umbers
brought in solely for them
from Leamington, Ontario.
Topinka's is no ordinary
eating place . . . not that
it ever was . . . but the
emphasis now is on
BIG . . . when it comes
to food portions that
is . . . Our waitresses like
Jamie Henson and Cindy
Carter are still petite young
lassies . . . About the wait-
resses at Topinka's, by the
way, I, among others, like
the no-rushing-you attitude
that owner Al Balooly has
instilled in them . . . This
has always been a bone of
contention with me at many
other restaurants . . . espe-
cially places where you are
handed a menu by the wait-
ress who stands there wait-
ing to take your order.
Topinka's is casual dining
at its finest . . . in an elegant
atmosphere hard to beat .. .
Cleanliness at Topinka's is
almost a ritual . . . Heaven
forbid there should be bread
crumbs lying around . . . It's
enough to make Al have a
fit!
The new BIG dining
concept is available at
both Topinka's Country
House and Topinka's On
