"I accept that I am Jewish, but I do not practice any of their cus- toms," Zhongyu said. "Such things cannot survive. They have been overpowered by Chinese habits." Such thinking is an out- growth of the Japanese in- vasion of China during the 1930s, according to the arti- cle. During the invasion, Japanese soldiers scoured Kaifeng looking for Jews to harass. Many Jews hid be- hind their Oriental features to survive. Kaifeng' s Jewish community, which began settling in China during the 12th Century, pros- pered for nearly 500 years. A 17th Century .
