various reasons. He de-
fended Maimonides, for in-
stance, for leaving out
"choice" because it involves
"knowledge of human mat-
ters" and not "a belief about
God." He similarly defended
Maimonides for disregard-
ing miracles as a separate
principle, "Since we believe
that all the narratives in
the Torah (were given) from
the mouth of the Almighty,
we are obliged to believe
them as we believe the
commandments."
Although Abravanel
defended Maimonides
against the objections of
Hasdai Crescas and
Joseph Albo, neverthe-
less, he himself disagreed
with Maimonides for
singling out certain prin-
ciples in preference to
others.. "The truth is that.
they are all principles,"
he asserted, "upon which
the divine Torahis based,
for if a man denies or con-
tradicts any one of them,
even the smallest, it is if
he said that the Torah is
not from Heaven."
The translator, Menahem
Marc Kellner, studied rab-
binics at the Hebrew
Theological College
(Chicago) and Yeshivat
Merkaz ha-Rav Kook
(Jerusalem) and philosophy
at Washington University
(PhD). He is currently a
senior lecturer in the de-
partment of Jewish thought
at the University of Haifa.
