Students Out of Ivory Tower

RAMAT GAN — Bar-Ilan
University students appar-
ently believe in getting out
of the academic ivory tower
and into the community.
Some 800 of them, including
foreign students, partici-
pate in the Perach (Flower)
Program, in which they
tutor and help culturally
enrich underprivileged
children.
Another 80 Bar-Ilan stu-
dents take part in a unique
program called Kesher

(Contact), which was set up
in conjunction with the
Brookdale Foundation of
New York.

In this program, students
meet regularly on a one-to-
one basis with elderly citi-
zens who live alone, many of
whom have some handicap.
The young people earn
their trust and help them
find new interests and ac-
tivities to take them out of
their isolation.
