The Israeli government
amended the Israeli Abor-
tion Law this year accord-
ing to an agreement be-
tween Likud and the
ultra-Orthodox Agudat
Yisrael. The amendment
forbids abortions except in
cases approved by a special
commission of the Health
Ministry.
In recent weeks, hun-
dreds of Jewish women have
gone to Arab doctors to have
abortions in Arab hospitals
in East Jerusalem, Ramal-
lah and other places. The
Arab doctors first make
x-rays so that they can
claim the abortions were
carried out for health rea-
sons. They charge up to
$300 dollars and the women
have to spend one night in
an Arab hospital.
Agudat Yisrael has now
succeeded in having the
Health Ministry appoint an
