hit of the game. Dean
yielded eight hits, as the St.
Louis Cardinals defeated
the Detroit Tigers, at Navin
Field, 8-3.

Latman's first major
league shutout?
Johnny Romano. On
Sept. 26, 1958, Latman,
who had 10 career shutouts,
allowed three singles. In the
sixth inning, John Calli-
son's sacrifice fly scored
Romano with the only run of
the game. The Chicago
White Sox defeated the
Kansas City Athletics, at
Comiskey Park, 1-0. Bob
Grim was the losing pitcher.

player to pinch-hit for
Hall of Famer Mel Ott?
Sid Gordon. On Sept. 2,
1946, in the seventh inning
of the second game of a dou-
ble header, Gordon singled
off Ernie White, scoring
