Technion Ammonia Production Method Conserves Energy

HAIFA — A new process
which results in a substan-
tial saving of energy in the
production of ammonia has
been developed by Prof.
Ram Lavie of the depart-
ment of chemical engineer-
ing at the Technion.
The development is ex-
pected to lead to direct sav-
ings of more than $5 mill-
ion annually in the average
ammonia manufacturing
plant. The economic ramifi-
cations of the new process
could be far reaching, in
light of the fact that am-
monia is a major component
in agricultural fertilizers.
"Ammonia production
consumes considerable
amounts of energy. With
rising energy costs and rela-
tively stable product prices,
the incentives for efficiency
have never been higher,"
Prof. Lavie said. "The in-

Three Terrorists
Caught at Border

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
army patrol captured a
three-man terrorist group
which had infiltrated into
north Israel near Kibutz
Hanita last week.
The patrol pursued the in-
filtrators a short distance
into southern Lebanon and
captured them without fir-
ing a shot, army sources
said. The group to which the
captured terrorists belong
was not immediately ascer-
tained.

dustry is seeking ways to
improve the efficiency of
new and existing plants."
The production of am-
monia in a plant is di-
vided into stages. In the
first stage, a relatively
pure mixture of hydro-
gen and nitrogen is pro-
duced from fuel and air;

li

in the second stage this
gas mixture is converted
into ammonia.
In conventional plants
about five to eight percent of
the raw gas is lost through
purging during a necessary
purification process. The
new process reduces to a
minimum the purging, thus

saving most of the gas.
Future ammonia plants
using the new process will
also benefit from operation
under less severe conditions
and reduced purity re-
quirements. The new proc-
ess poses no new safety con-
straints or limitation as
compared to existing plants.
