The Middle East situa- tion has become so crusted over by considerations of geopolitics and oil, and so involved in propaganda, that it is difficult for the av- erage person to remember what is involved here. There have always been Jews in what is now Israel, from the time of the first Hebrew conquest of the land, through the worst and most inimical rules, right down to the present. The Arabs, by contrast, are comparative newcomers, beginning their expansive thrust into the area only in the Early Middle Ages. At no time was there ever an independent Arab nation in the region; only the Jews, ancient and modern, have ever built a state here. Significantly, like the Christian New Testament, the Moslem Koran contains passages that can serve as fuel for anti-Jewish actions. Furthermore, while it is true that not all Arabs are Moslems these days, most look back on the great con- quering century from 632 to 732 CE as evidence of Arab superiority over other peoples, including Chris- tians and Jews. In the late 1940s, the United Nations decreed the establishment of the modern state of Israel, a decision which the Arabs continue to try to get the present day United Na- tions to effectively re- verse. The simple fact is that no one has ever made it clear to the Arabs that they must share, any more than any- one ever made it clear to Hitler that his butchering of Europe's Jews would be frowned upon. So, although Arab na- tions have all of the Middle East except for one little sliver, although their por- tion contains the over- whelming preponderance of the mineral wealth of the region, although they can have peaceful access to their holy places in Jerusalem any time they choose to es- tablish normal relations with Israel, all of this does not satisfy them. Such is their hatred for their Jewish neighbors that noth- ing will do but the extermi- nation of the Jews. To that end Arab ex- tremists have fought four wars, murdered innocent schoolchildren, sportsmen and Travelers, and held the world to ransom for oil. Unfortunately, the world has shown itself all too ready to be held to ransom. The great historical immor- ality of anti-Semitism re- mains strong in the West- ern world even after the Holocaust, just as it does among the Arabs. It is time for those who wish evil to Israel to realize that the Israelis are not going to go away quietly. For the first time in Jewish history, these people have the means to defend themselves. If Is- rael is pushed into a fight to the death, chances are that both the Soviet Union and the United States will be drawn in. The probable conse- quence will be the end of all life on earth. Anti-Semites should therefore realize that the choice is either life with the Jews, or death with them. This consideration may help to alter the thinking of a few such hate-ridden indi- viduals. The rest of us, mean- while, can do nothing more useful for peace and for the human future than to insist that our government make clear to the Arabs, and to the rest of the world, that Israel has an irrefutable right to exist, and that the Arab world must come to terms with this fact. German Court Reverses Ruling in Nazi Case BONN (JTA) — A West German court has reversed the conviction of a neo-Nazi activist who had been sen- tenced to 10 months impris- onment for distributing pamphlets alleging that the Holocaust never occurred. The court, in Celle, Lower Saxony, ruled that denial of the Holocaust does not con- stitute an offense under West German law, although the judges conceded that such behavior was an as- sault on the honor of Jews. The ruling nullified the conviction of neo-Nazi Edgar Geiss by a lower court in the town of Stade. God made the country, and man made the town.
